ON PROVIDENCE, i. 2-4on unhindered, producing so m<strong>an</strong>y things on l<strong>an</strong>d<strong>an</strong>d sea, so m<strong>an</strong>y brilh<strong>an</strong>t Ughts in the sky all shiningin fixed array ; that this regularity does not belongto matter moving at r<strong>an</strong>dom, <strong>an</strong>d that whatevercombinations result from ch<strong>an</strong>ce do not adjust themselveswith that artistry where<strong>by</strong> the earth, theheaviest in weight, abides immovable <strong>an</strong>d beholdsthe flight of the sky as it wliirls around it, <strong>an</strong>d theseas, flooding vths spring up from the tiniest seeds. Even thosephenomena which seem irregular <strong>an</strong>d undetermined—I me<strong>an</strong> showers <strong>an</strong>d clouds, the stroke of crashingthunderbolts <strong>an</strong>d the fires that belch from the rivenpeaks of mountains, tremors of the quaking ground,<strong>an</strong>d the other disturb<strong>an</strong>ces wliich the turbulent elementin nature sets in motion about the earth, these,no matter how suddenly they occur, do not happenwithout a reason ; nay, they also are the result ofspecial causes, <strong>an</strong>d so, in like m<strong>an</strong>ner, are thosethings which seem miraculous <strong>by</strong> reason of the incongruoussituations in which they are beheld, suchas warm waters in the midst of the sea-waves, <strong>an</strong>dthe exp<strong>an</strong>ses of new isl<strong>an</strong>ds that spring up in thewide oce<strong>an</strong>. Moreover, if <strong>an</strong>y one observes how theshore is laid bare as the sea withdraws into itself,<strong>an</strong>d how within a short time the same stretch iscovered over again, he will suppose that it is someblind fluctuation which causes the waves now toshrink <strong>an</strong>d flow inwards, now to burst forth <strong>an</strong>d inmighty sweep seek their former resting-place,whereas in fact they increase <strong>by</strong> degrees, <strong>an</strong>d trueto the hour <strong>an</strong>d the day they approach in proper-
