found materials, <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>the</strong> exhibition's nexus, and sheds light on <strong>the</strong> ethics of custodianship and <strong>the</strong> artist's<br />

intention. After <strong>the</strong> untimely death of Smith, his executor stripped <strong>the</strong> white color off of five sculptures<br />

(believing it to be primer) to bare metal. The exhibition, which also will feature a film and catalogue, is held in<br />

commemoration of <strong>the</strong> 50th anniversary of Storm King's landmark acquisition of 13 David Smith sculptures. The<br />

works will be displayed in <strong>the</strong> center's rolling hills. Smaller works, as well as carefully selected groupings of<br />

Smith's paintings and photography that also engage with <strong>the</strong> color white, will be displayed in <strong>the</strong> gallery.<br />

Thomas Cole Historic House (aka Thomas Cole <strong>National</strong> Historic Site)<br />

$30,000 Catskill, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> exhibition "San<strong>for</strong>d Gif<strong>for</strong>d in <strong>the</strong> Catskills" and accompanying catalogue. The exhibition will<br />

focus on Gif<strong>for</strong>d's (1823-1880) depictions of his native Catskill landscape as well as Thomas Cole's influence on<br />

Gif<strong>for</strong>d's career. Gif<strong>for</strong>d, a member of <strong>the</strong> Hudson River School of landscape painting, had a lifelong devotion to<br />

depicting <strong>the</strong> Catskills, where many vistas still exist due to conservation ef<strong>for</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> last two centuries. The<br />

exhibition will include public programs, such as hikes along <strong>the</strong> Hudson River School Art Trail, where visitors will<br />

be able to immerse <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>the</strong> landscapes depicted by <strong>the</strong> artists.<br />

To support Princeton University Art Museum's traveling exhibition on A<strong>the</strong>nian vase painting. The Berlin Painter<br />

and his World: A<strong>the</strong>nian Vase Painting in <strong>the</strong> Early Fifth Century B.C. will focus on <strong>the</strong> red-figure artist known as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Berlin Painter, whose images provide a window into classical Greek culture and its subsequent impact on<br />

global civilization. The exhibition will examine <strong>the</strong>se works from a variety of archaeological contexts-tombs,<br />

dwellings, and religious sites, such as <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian Acropolis. Public programming designed to reach K-12 and<br />

university students, scholars, and broad regional audiences will support <strong>the</strong> exhibition in Princeton and at its<br />

second venue at <strong>the</strong> Toledo Museum of Art. The exhibition also will be <strong>the</strong> focus of a semester-long college<br />

course and faculty-led panel discussions open to <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

$20,000 Pittsfield, MA<br />

To support "In <strong>the</strong> Spirit," a series of installations by contemporary artists in <strong>the</strong> museum's Art Deco Crane<br />

room. In <strong>the</strong> Spirit will feature three artists-Yusuke Asai, Karin Giusti, and Meredith Woolnough-whose sitespecific<br />

work will explore <strong>the</strong> intersection of art and natural science. Each artist will interpret <strong>the</strong> natural world<br />

from a different perspective: farm and woodlands, a landscape of <strong>the</strong> imagination, and life in a coral reef. Public<br />

programs will engage audiences with <strong>the</strong> artists' installation process, <strong>the</strong>ir use of techniques and materials, and<br />

content connecting to contemporary issues related to environmental stewardship and global<br />

interconnectedness.<br />

University of Kansas Center <strong>for</strong> Research, Inc. (On behalf of Spencer Museum of Art)<br />

$25,000 Lawrence, KS<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Spencer Museum of Art's exhibition, "Big Botany: Conversations with <strong>the</strong> Plant World" and<br />

accompanying catalogue. This exhibition will explore humankind's fascination with <strong>the</strong> plant kingdom through<br />

works from <strong>the</strong> museum's collection, a number of loans, and commissions by approximately 20 artists. Artists to<br />

be commissioned include Ackroyd and Harvey, Sandy Winters, and Mathias Kessler. University students,<br />

scholars, artists, scientists, and <strong>the</strong> general public will engage with <strong>the</strong> exhibition's central <strong>the</strong>mes through a<br />

range of educational programs, such as artist-led talks and film screenings. The catalogue will document <strong>the</strong><br />

project and include brief texts by artists and curators as well as biologists, ecologists, and philosophers.<br />

Some details of <strong>the</strong> projects listed are subject to change, contingent upon prior <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Endowment</strong> approval. In<strong>for</strong>mation is current as of<br />
