Lexington Philharmonic Society Inc. (aka LexPhil)<br />

$10,000 Lexington, KY<br />

To support a residency by pianist and composer Conrad Tao. Activities will take place in partnership with <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Kentucky HealthCare's Art in HealthCare Program. Plans include a free solo concert by Tao in <strong>the</strong><br />

main hospital atrium, a <strong>the</strong>rapist- and faculty-supported per<strong>for</strong>mance at Eastern State Hospital <strong>for</strong> mental<br />

health patients, middle and high school programs, and an open rehearsal. The residency will culminate in an<br />

orchestral concert featuring Tao's original composition, "Pangu," and as featured soloist in George Gershwin's<br />

Piano Concerto.<br />

Litchfield Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong>, Inc. (aka Litchfield Jazz Fest (LJF))<br />

$10,000 Litchfield, CT<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Litchfield Jazz Festival. The festival will feature per<strong>for</strong>mances by emerging artists representing a<br />

diverse mix of musical styles and instruments such as Joe Alterman (piano), Rudresh Mahanthappa (saxophone),<br />

Linda Oh (bass), Christian Scott (trumpet), Veronica Swift (vocals), Aaron Weinstein (violin), and <strong>the</strong> Litchfield<br />

Jazz Orchestra. Selected festival per<strong>for</strong>mers will be engaged to teach master classes and participate in free<br />

public per<strong>for</strong>mances at <strong>the</strong> Litchfield Jazz Camp during <strong>the</strong> month be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> festival. O<strong>the</strong>r ancillary activities<br />

may include artist talks moderated by DownBeat magazine editor Frank Alkyer.<br />

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Society, Inc. (aka LACO)<br />

$25,000 Los Angeles, CA<br />

To support a Martin Lu<strong>the</strong>r King Jr. tribute concert and a presentation of Kurt Weill's "Seven Deadly Sins" with<br />

related educational activities. Members of <strong>the</strong> chamber orchestra will per<strong>for</strong>m side-by-side with <strong>the</strong> Inner City<br />

Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) in a commemoration of <strong>the</strong> King Holiday. Repertoire may include<br />

selections from Michael Tippett's "A Child of Our Time." Orchestra musicians will provide coaching and<br />

mentoring to members of ICYOLA. Also planned is a concert featuring <strong>the</strong> Weill work with vocalist Storm Large<br />

and vocal quartet Hudson Shad. The program will include Bruce Adolphe's Violin Concerto: "I Will Not Remain<br />

Silent" with soloist Daniel Hope and Weill's "Song Suite <strong>for</strong> Violin and Orchestra" arranged by Paul Bateman.<br />

Los Angeles Master Chorale Association (aka Los Angeles Master Chorale)<br />

$45,000 Los Angeles, CA<br />

To support Lux Aeterna, concerts celebrating <strong>the</strong> works of living choral composers with related educational<br />

activities. Plans include per<strong>for</strong>mances by composers Shawn Kirchner, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Moira Smiley, and<br />

commissioned works by Billy Childs and Eric Whitacre. The program also will feature "Lux Aeterna" by Morten<br />

Lauridsen, <strong>the</strong> chorale's <strong>for</strong>mer composer-in-residence. Whitacre's new work will result from his role as <strong>the</strong><br />

chorale's first artist-in-residence. The new work by Childs will be his second commission <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> chorale since<br />

"The Voices of Angeles" in 2005. Per<strong>for</strong>mances will take place at <strong>the</strong> Walt Disney Concert Hall. Educational<br />

activities may include open rehearsals <strong>for</strong> high school choir students and ListenUp!, a pre-concert discussion led<br />

by Music Director <strong>Grant</strong> Gershon and KUSC classical radio host Alan Chapman.<br />

Louisville Orchestra, Inc. (aka Louisville Orchestra)<br />

$15,000 Louisville, KY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Festival of American Music with related educational activities. The festival will feature new works<br />

by Music Director Teddy Abrams including "Muhammad Ali Portrait" honoring <strong>the</strong> Louisville native as well as<br />

Abrams' Louisville Concerto No. 2 with local musicians. Also, a concert titled The American Journey is planned<br />
