Preserving Our Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Appalachian Music, Inc. (aka POSAM)<br />

$10,000 Pickens, SC<br />

To support a bluegrass music education program. Youth and adults will receive instruction <strong>for</strong> various stringed<br />

instruments of bluegrass music: banjo, bass, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. Students also will learn songs from<br />

that genre. Classes will be offered to youth in after school and summer programs, while evening programs will<br />

provide instruction to adults. The project will conclude with per<strong>for</strong>mance opportunities <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> students.<br />

Radio Bilingue, Inc. (aka Radio Bilingue)<br />

$25,000 Fresno, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> radio broadcast of <strong>the</strong> Narciso Martinez Conjunto Festival and related programs. In addition to<br />

<strong>the</strong> live per<strong>for</strong>mances of <strong>the</strong> festival's traditional conjunto tejano music, <strong>the</strong> broadcast will include commentary<br />

and interviews with <strong>the</strong> artists. Following <strong>the</strong> festival, radio programs drawn from festival recordings will be<br />

produced to include per<strong>for</strong>mances, interviews, and commentary about <strong>the</strong> history and significance of conjunto<br />

music.<br />

Salt Lake <strong>Arts</strong> Council Foundation (aka Salt Lake City <strong>Arts</strong> Council)<br />

$15,000 Salt Lake City, UT<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Living Traditions Festival: A Celebration of Salt Lake's Folk and Ethnic <strong>Arts</strong>. Traditional music,<br />

dance, and crafts from <strong>the</strong> many ethnic communities of <strong>the</strong> Salt Lake Valley-including Basque, Mexican, Pacific<br />

Islander, and Native American-will be presented. Additional components will include hands-on arts activities <strong>for</strong><br />

youth at <strong>the</strong> festival, as well as a school day program allowing students an opportunity to participate more fully<br />

in culturally diverse activities.<br />

Sones de Mexico Ensemble (aka Sones de Mexico)<br />

$30,000 Chicago, IL<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> U.S. tour of Beyond <strong>the</strong> Music: A Musical Geography of Mexico. While on tour, <strong>the</strong> ensemble will<br />

present free educational programs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> general public demonstrating Mexican folk music and dance from <strong>the</strong><br />

various geographic regions of that country. The programs will illustrate <strong>the</strong> diversity of musical styles found in<br />

Mexico and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of <strong>the</strong> culture.<br />

Step Afrika! USA Incorporated (aka Step Afrika!)<br />

$10,000 Washington, DC<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Black History Month Tour. Per<strong>for</strong>mances of stepping, an African-American traditional dance <strong>for</strong>m<br />

that combines polyrhythmic, percussive footsteps, claps, body percussion, and spoken-word, will tour college<br />

campuses and per<strong>for</strong>ming arts centers across <strong>the</strong> country. Scheduled to coincide with Black History Month, <strong>the</strong><br />

artists will offer workshops and master classes.<br />

Taiko Community Alliance<br />

$10,000 San Jose, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> North American Taiko Conference. The conference will bring toge<strong>the</strong>r per<strong>for</strong>mers, teachers, and<br />

enthusiasts of taiko drumming <strong>for</strong> workshops, discussion groups, demonstrations, jam sessions, and<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances of taiko drumming. NEA <strong>National</strong> Heritage Fellows Roy and PJ Hirabayashi are scheduled to<br />

participate in discussion panels and per<strong>for</strong>mances.<br />

Some details of <strong>the</strong> projects listed are subject to change, contingent upon prior <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Endowment</strong> approval. In<strong>for</strong>mation is current as of<br />

December 7, 2016.
