Museum of <strong>the</strong> City of New York and <strong>the</strong> city's boroughs, will explore how Soviet policy effected <strong>the</strong>ir art and<br />

how <strong>the</strong>ir art has changed since <strong>the</strong> collapse of <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union. A website will make <strong>the</strong> field notes and<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>the</strong> artists available to <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

City of East Lansing, Michigan<br />

$35,000 East Lansing, MI<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Great Lakes Folk Festival. The festival will showcase significant folk artists from <strong>the</strong> Upper<br />

Midwest, as well as present a sampling of traditional artists from around <strong>the</strong> country and world. In addition to<br />

traditional music and dance per<strong>for</strong>mances and craft demonstrations, festival visitors will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

participate in organized jam sessions and community sing-alongs. Narrative sessions about traditional arts and<br />

health issues are also planned <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> festival.<br />

City of San Fernando, Cali<strong>for</strong>nia (aka City of San Fernando)<br />

$57,000 San Fernando, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Mariachi Master Apprentice Program. During weekly after-school programs, master musicians<br />

will instruct community youth in playing traditional mariachi instruments, such as <strong>the</strong> violin, guitar, guitarron,<br />

vihuela, trumpet, and folk harp. In addition to receiving instruction, <strong>the</strong> students will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

per<strong>for</strong>m with professional mariachi artists and learn recording studio techniques.<br />

City of Tarpon Springs, Florida (On behalf of Cultural and Civic Services Department)<br />

$10,000 Tarpon Springs, FL<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Cultural and Civic Services Department's creation of a documentary about <strong>the</strong> Greek community<br />

in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and related programming. Work will begin on adocumentary film that will present an<br />

insider's view of <strong>the</strong> Greek community including: music, dance, regional foodways, sponge fishing practices,<br />

religious customs, and rites of passage, such as marriage and death. O<strong>the</strong>r programming will include workshops<br />

about traditional Greek music, as well as weekly Greek dances.<br />

Clifton Cultural Center, Inc. (aka Clifton Center)<br />

$30,000 Louisville, KY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Louisville Heritage Music Festival. A series of events will celebrate <strong>the</strong> musical traditions of<br />

distinct geographical or cultural regions with concerts, community dances, workshops, film screenings, school<br />

outreach activities, and lectures. As many as four, three-day festivals are planned and will include Kentucky<br />

mountain music, <strong>the</strong> music of Brazil, music of <strong>the</strong> African diaspora, and Acadian music from Nova Scotia and<br />

Louisiana.<br />

Community Economic Development Center of Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Mass (aka CEDC)<br />

$15,000 New Bed<strong>for</strong>d, MA<br />

To support Traditional <strong>Arts</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Working Waterfront. A year-long series of exhibits and presentations<br />

celebrating <strong>the</strong> expressive culture of New Bed<strong>for</strong>d's maritime community will be presented in area schools and<br />

at <strong>the</strong> New Bed<strong>for</strong>d Heritage Fishing Center. The per<strong>for</strong>mances will feature traditional music, storytelling, and<br />

poetry. Exhibits will include <strong>the</strong> occupational art of making fishing nets, knot tying and a one-day boat model<br />

festival. Additionally, a mini-festival highlighting <strong>the</strong> traditional arts of New Bed<strong>for</strong>d's Guatemalan Mayan<br />

community is planned.<br />
