Hernandez Mariachi Heritage Society (aka Mariachi Heritage Society)<br />

$30,000 South El Monte, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong>s Institute. The institute will offer youth and adults instruction <strong>for</strong> traditional mariachi<br />

instruments-violin, guitar, guitarron, vihuela, trumpet, and folk harp. Additionally, students will learn <strong>the</strong> history<br />

of mariachi music and its place in Mexican culture. The institute will conclude with a concert providing students<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to per<strong>for</strong>m with prestigious mariachi ensembles, such as Mariachi Sol De Mexico.<br />

Hydaburg Cooperative Association (aka HCA)<br />

$40,000 Hydaburg, AK<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Naa Iwaans (Big Cedar House) Traditional Carving Project. Master artists from <strong>the</strong> Haida tribe will<br />

work closely with as many as three Native apprentices to carve house posts (interior totem poles), which will be<br />

displayed in <strong>the</strong> tribe's cultural center. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> general public will be invited to attend weekly carving<br />

classes where <strong>the</strong>y can learn carving techniques and participate in <strong>the</strong> creation of <strong>the</strong> poles.<br />

Instituto Cervantes of Chicago, Inc. (aka Instituto Cervantes of Chicago)<br />

$20,000 Chicago, IL<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Chicago Flamenco Festival. Recognized international flamenco dancers, guitarists, and singers,<br />

along with emerging local flamenco artists, will offer a series of concerts, classes, and workshops presenting all<br />

aspects of <strong>the</strong> art of flamenco. Additional project activities will include a photography exhibition displaying<br />

images of flamenco artists and <strong>the</strong> screening of films relevant to <strong>the</strong> art of flamenco.<br />

International Folk Art Foundation (aka IFAF)<br />

$60,000 Santa Fe, NM<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> second phase of <strong>the</strong> Folk <strong>Arts</strong> and Social Change Project. An exhibit featuring folk art from U.S.<br />

and international artists-including quilts from Chinese minority populations, Peruvian "retablos," Rwandan<br />

baskets, textiles from indigenous Mexican peoples, and Native American pottery-will present <strong>the</strong> artists'<br />

response to societal crises, such as war, political instability, dislocation, economic upheaval, racial prejudice, and<br />

ecological challenges. The exhibit will be accompanied by artist residencies, lectures, and demonstrations.<br />

International Storytelling Association (aka International Storytelling Center)<br />

$30,000 Jonesborough, TN<br />

To support Storytelling Live!, a seasonal artist residency program. Master artists representing a broad range of<br />

storytelling traditions from <strong>the</strong> United States and abroad will conduct week-long residencies. In addition to<br />

storytelling per<strong>for</strong>mances, <strong>the</strong> artists will offer workshops and present special programs intended to serve<br />

seniors and youth.<br />

Jubilee Community <strong>Arts</strong>, Inc. (aka Laurel Theater)<br />

$15,000 Knoxville, TN<br />

To support traditional music per<strong>for</strong>mances at <strong>the</strong> Laurel Theater. In addition to a weekly concert series of live<br />

music, folklorists will conduct fieldwork to document local traditional musicians. Selected recordings from<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances and fieldwork will be broadcast via local public radio stations.<br />

Local Learning: The <strong>National</strong> Network <strong>for</strong> Folk <strong>Arts</strong> in Education (aka Local Learning)<br />

$40,000 New York, NY<br />
