mentoring programs <strong>for</strong> students. Central to <strong>the</strong> festival is Playing <strong>for</strong> Peace, a scholarship program that places<br />

U.S. and international musicians in small ensembles and provides coaching in <strong>the</strong> skills of chamber music.<br />

Bang on a Can, Inc. (aka Bang on a Can)<br />

$55,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support a per<strong>for</strong>mance series and resident teaching facility <strong>for</strong> emerging composers and contemporary music<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mers. Hosted by <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, <strong>the</strong> festival will<br />

feature concerts by <strong>the</strong> Bang on a Can All-Stars, resident teaching faculty, and students in galleries and in<br />

community venues. Community engagement activities will include a family concert and a free per<strong>for</strong>mance at<br />

Windsor Lake Park. The finale of <strong>the</strong> festival will be <strong>the</strong> annual Bang on a Can Marathon, an event featuring<br />

musicians and composers from around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

Bard College (On behalf of Bard Music Festival)<br />

$15,000 Annandale-Hudson, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Bard Music Festival and related educational activities. Led by <strong>the</strong> resident ensemble, American<br />

Symphony Orchestra under <strong>the</strong> direction of Artistic Director Leon Botstein, <strong>the</strong> festival will take place at <strong>the</strong><br />

Richard B. Fisher Center and will explore <strong>the</strong> world and music of Polish composer and virtuoso pianist Frederic<br />

Chopin (1810-49). Programming will include piano recitals as well as orchestral concerts by o<strong>the</strong>r Polish<br />

composers at <strong>the</strong> time. A highlight will be a semi-staged per<strong>for</strong>mance of "Halka" by Stanislaw Moniuszko,<br />

considered to be Poland's "national" opera. Educational activities will include panel discussions and a<br />

companion volume of essays.<br />

Bellingham Festival of Music<br />

$10,000 Bellingham, WA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Bellingham Festival of Music. The summer festival features orchestral and chamber music<br />

concerts throughout <strong>the</strong> community. Orchestra per<strong>for</strong>mances will be conducted by Artistic Director Michael<br />

Palmer at <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong> Center of Western Washington University, and chamber music per<strong>for</strong>mances at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bellingham Cruise Terminal and <strong>the</strong> Whatcom Museum of History and Art. The festival also will offer<br />

educational activities such as programs <strong>for</strong> school children, master classes, open rehearsals, and pre-concert<br />

lectures.<br />

Bernard Osher Marin Jewish Community Center (aka Osher Marin JCC)<br />

$10,000 San Rafael, CA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Kanbar Music Series and <strong>the</strong> Summer Nights Festival. The year-long series will encompass more<br />

than 15 indoor and outdoor concerts at <strong>the</strong> Bernard Osher Marin Jewish Community Center featuring classical<br />

and chamber music, jazz, folk, and world music artists. Ancillary activities may include dance lessons, art<br />

activities <strong>for</strong> youth, audience discussions, or ice cream socials to encourage active community engagement. The<br />

outdoors Summer Nights Festival will be curated to include a wide variety of musical styles to attract families<br />

with young children as well as seniors and o<strong>the</strong>r underserved audiences. Free and discounted tickets will be<br />

made available to underserved audiences. Per<strong>for</strong>mers may include Chanticleer, <strong>the</strong> Kronos Quartet, violinist<br />

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg with <strong>the</strong> New Century Chamber Orchestra, and <strong>the</strong> Mill Valley Philharmonic.<br />

Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc. (aka Boston Symphony Orchestra)<br />

$75,000 Boston, MA<br />

To support a series of concerts featuring co-commissioned works in Boston and New York City with related<br />

educational activities. Composers to be featured will include Julian Anderson, George Benjamin, Sofia<br />

Gubaidulina, and Matthias Pintscher. Concerts will take place in Symphony Hall in Boston, and Carnegie Hall in<br />
