To support music instruction <strong>for</strong> students from low-income communities across Los Angeles County. Students<br />
have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to participate in musicianship classes, instrumental music lessons, and participate in<br />
ensembles such as band, orchestra, choir, and jazz band. Older students in <strong>the</strong> program may become peer<br />
mentors to younger students and act as teaching assistants to <strong>the</strong> music instructors. In addition to music<br />
training, high school students have access to college prep workshops and all students may take advantage of <strong>the</strong><br />
Family/Parent Liaison to connect with outside social support resources. The program includes a field trip <strong>for</strong><br />
students and <strong>the</strong>ir families to a classical concert at <strong>the</strong> Hollywood Bowl, <strong>for</strong> which transportation is provided.<br />
Heart of Los Angeles Youth, Inc. (aka Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA))<br />
$50,000 Los Angeles, CA<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles at Heart of Los Angeles (YOLA at HOLA). The YOLA at HOLA<br />
program is a partnership with <strong>the</strong> Los Angeles Philharmonic and is directly inspired by Music Director Gustavo<br />
Dudamel's <strong>for</strong>mative experience with El Sistema, Venezuela's youth orchestra movement supporting social<br />
change through music. Elementary and middle school students receive free after-school instruction from<br />
professional teaching artists through orchestra rehearsals, musicianship classes, and singing classes. The<br />
program involves parents through classroom volunteer opportunities, music fundamentals, violin lessons,<br />
participation in HOLA's choir and <strong>the</strong> opportunity to per<strong>for</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>ir children at some of <strong>the</strong> community<br />
concerts. In addition to music instruction and per<strong>for</strong>mance opportunities, students benefit from individualized<br />
academic support, positive youth development opportunities, counseling services, SAT prep courses, and private<br />
tutoring.<br />
Kentucky Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> Corporation (aka The Kentucky Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong>)<br />

To support Rising Artists professional development and direct learning program in rural, eastern Kentucky. In<br />
partnership with Morehead State University and Kentucky Department of Education, classroom teachers and<br />
school administrators will receive professional development and create curriculum and assessment. As lessons<br />
are used in <strong>the</strong> classroom, both teachers and <strong>the</strong>ir students will make use of a virtual teaching plat<strong>for</strong>m that<br />
allows video recording of lessons, instructional feedback, upload of lesson plans, and instructional apps.<br />
Levine Music, Inc. (aka Levine Music)<br />
$10,000 Washington, DC<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> First Music program, providing music instruction free-of-charge to young children in underserved<br />
neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. Infants, pre-Kindergarten, and elementary aged students will participate in a<br />
36-week music curriculum based on <strong>the</strong> early childhood methodologies of Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze that<br />
nurture <strong>the</strong> development of cognitive, social, and motor skills. During class sessions at daycare and school sites<br />
across <strong>the</strong> city, students, <strong>the</strong>ir teachers, and daycare providers will explore music through singing, movement,<br />
children's literature, and rhythm instruments. Music instructors will focus on sensory learning and encourage<br />
<strong>the</strong> children to develop skills in many areas, including rhythm, pitch, and expressive qualities.<br />
Literature <strong>for</strong> All of Us<br />
$20,000 Evanston, IL<br />
To support Books Alive!, a literary arts program. Students will participate in weekly book group sessions<br />
facilitated by teaching artists and will discuss literature, write poetry, publish <strong>the</strong>ir work in online and offline<br />
publications, and present <strong>the</strong>ir work in public readings. Students will read and discuss <strong>the</strong> works of well-known<br />
writers, such as Maya Angelou, Junot Diaz, and Luis Rodriguez. Visiting artists, writing retreats, and field trips to<br />
drama and spoken-word per<strong>for</strong>mances and art centers are planned to enrich students' experiences in <strong>the</strong> arts.<br />
