$35,000 Chicago, IL<br />

To support Open House Chicago (OHC) <strong>2017</strong>. OHC is a free, citywide event that offers public access to hidden<br />

places and spaces throughout <strong>the</strong> city, along with o<strong>the</strong>r public programming such as per<strong>for</strong>mances,<br />

demonstrations, exhibitions, and youth education programs. These activities engage area residents and visitors<br />

in celebrating Chicago's rich culture and architectural heritage as part of an ongoing community engagement<br />

strategy.<br />

Cultural Landscape Foundation (aka The Cultural Landscape Foundation)<br />

$35,000 Washington, DC<br />

To support What's Out There Weekends. The program will feature expert-led tours of designed landscapes in<br />

Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and Nashville. Working with local individuals and organizations, The Cultural Landscape<br />

Foundation (TCLF) will identify appropriate properties, conduct research, develop documentation, and post to<br />

its online database, What's Out There. In addition to online content, TCLF will produce illustrated guidebooks<br />

with maps and detailed narrative texts.<br />

Design Trust <strong>for</strong> Public Space Inc. (aka Design Trust <strong>for</strong> Public Space)<br />

$35,000 New York, NY<br />

To support The Community Compact: Strategies <strong>for</strong> Shared Stewardship of <strong>the</strong> Public Realm. Project participants<br />

will examine <strong>the</strong> role of public space in urban life, considering how parks and plazas can better address <strong>the</strong><br />

needs of diverse communities and maximize health, social, economic, and environmental benefits. The initiative<br />

will commence with a request <strong>for</strong> proposals, resulting in several projects that will deliver a work of art and<br />

design intended to explore this public space <strong>the</strong>me.<br />

Design that Matters, Inc.<br />

$40,000 Salem, MA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> DtM Design Internship Program. The interns will learn and apply Design that Matters' particular<br />

product development process, including market research, concept development, iteration and testing, and will<br />

develop a functional prototype of a medical device <strong>for</strong> newborns in developing countries. The program is<br />

designed <strong>for</strong> students and recent graduates who are socially-driven, entrepreneurial individuals with industrial<br />

design and engineering backgrounds.<br />

DownCity Design<br />

$25,000 Providence, RI<br />

To support Innovation by Design. This initiative will promote design education throughout Rhode Island using a<br />

series of free professional development workshops <strong>for</strong> teachers called Design Thinking in <strong>the</strong> Classroom.<br />

Experienced design educators also will partner with public school teachers to co-teach in-school design/build<br />

residencies in which students identify needs and challenges within <strong>the</strong>ir school and work toge<strong>the</strong>r to design and<br />

build small-scale structures, products, or programs. The training will empower youth to use <strong>the</strong> design process<br />

to create positive change in <strong>the</strong>ir communities.<br />

Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative Inc. (aka DSNI)<br />

$20,000 Roxbury, MA<br />

To support Re-imagining Space without Displacement. In response to Boston's citywide planning process,<br />

Imagine2030, DSNI is working with local residents to ensure that <strong>the</strong>y will benefit from intended improvements<br />

to housing, education, jobs, and arts and culture. DSNI will hire several local artists, supported by DSNI's staff,<br />

who will work with youth employees to design creative interventions that build <strong>the</strong> capacity and participation of<br />

residents to more effectively participate in citywide planning ef<strong>for</strong>ts.<br />

Some details of <strong>the</strong> projects listed are subject to change, contingent upon prior <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Endowment</strong> approval. In<strong>for</strong>mation is current as of<br />

December 7, 2016.
