To support <strong>the</strong> Ballet West <strong>National</strong> Choreographic Festival. Designed as a launching pad <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

new works <strong>for</strong> each company, <strong>the</strong> festival will feature per<strong>for</strong>mances by Ballet West, as well as several invited<br />

ballet companies from across <strong>the</strong> United States. As part of <strong>the</strong> company's education and outreach programming,<br />

students from local schools will attend a free per<strong>for</strong>mance and lecture. Per<strong>for</strong>mances will take place at <strong>the</strong><br />

George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah.<br />

Batoto Yetu, Inc. (aka Batoto Yetu)<br />

$10,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> acquisition of measurement tools and protocols to integrate assessment practices into Batoto<br />

Yetu's ongoing work. The company seeks data-driven measures of success to track and improve <strong>the</strong><br />

organization's mission, programs, and services. Assessment of <strong>the</strong> company's work will reflect on <strong>the</strong> past 25<br />

years and be integrated into <strong>the</strong> company's ongoing work in <strong>the</strong> future. The company will work with consulting<br />

group ARTS Action Research to develop outcomes, propose protocols <strong>for</strong> qualitative and quantitative measures,<br />

and assist with implementation and reassessment of tools.<br />

Big Tree Productions, Inc. (aka Tere O'Connor Dance)<br />

$10,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of a new work by Artistic Director Tere O'Connor. The choreographer<br />

will explore merging stage space with notions of landscape and building. Inspiration <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> work comes from<br />

reflecting on large landscapes of space and how minimal <strong>the</strong> human figure can appear in that context. The score<br />

will be created by James Baker and <strong>the</strong> lighting by Michael O'Connor.<br />

Boston Ballet, Inc. (aka Boston Ballet)<br />

$60,000 Boston, MA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of "Artifact," by choreographer William Forsy<strong>the</strong>. The company will per<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> full<br />

four-act version of <strong>the</strong> piece. With participation of Forsy<strong>the</strong>, stagers will set <strong>the</strong> piece on <strong>the</strong> company, giving<br />

dancers <strong>the</strong> opportunity to work directly with <strong>the</strong> choreographer. Dana Caspersen, Nicholas Champion, and<br />

Richard Siegal may appear in major non-speaking parts. O<strong>the</strong>r artists associated with Forsy<strong>the</strong> and this particular<br />

work include stagers Kathryn Bennetts and Noah Gelber, technical coordinators Dietrich Kruger and Tanja Ruhl,<br />

and pianist Margo Kazimirska. The work will be per<strong>for</strong>med at <strong>the</strong> Boston Opera House.<br />

Carolina Ballet, Inc. (aka Carolina Ballet)<br />

$10,000 Raleigh, NC<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of "Carmen," with live musical accompaniment by <strong>the</strong> Chamber Orchestra of <strong>the</strong><br />

Triangle (COT). The full-length ballet is choreographed by <strong>the</strong> company's Artistic Director Robert Weiss, with<br />

music arranged by Glenn Mehrbach taken from George Bizet's opera "Carmen" and Pablo Sarasate's violin<br />

tribute, "Carmen Fantasy." The ballet was premiered by <strong>the</strong> company in 2000 with live music. Both <strong>the</strong> 2006 and<br />

2011 productions of "Carmen" used Mehrbach's recorded music. The company started partnering with COT in<br />

2014 to incorporate live orchestras <strong>for</strong> various works, and will per<strong>for</strong>m "Carmen" with <strong>the</strong> company in spring<br />

<strong>2017</strong>.<br />

Center <strong>for</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>mance Research, Inc. (aka CPR - Center <strong>for</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>mance Research)<br />

$15,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support rehearsal and choreographic development. CPR programs will serve experimental dance and<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance communities in New York City by providing subsidized rates <strong>for</strong> space usage, access to a<br />

customizable per<strong>for</strong>mance space, and support from technical staff. The Artist-in-Residence program allows 10-<br />

15 artists access to rehearsal space throughout <strong>the</strong> year at fur<strong>the</strong>r subsidized rates. The Per<strong>for</strong>mance Studio<br />
