To support a commissioning and per<strong>for</strong>mance project of contemporary Chinese music in New York and<br />

Pittsburgh. Titled From Roots to Reality, <strong>the</strong> project will feature <strong>the</strong> premiere per<strong>for</strong>mances of new works by<br />

composers such as Mat<strong>the</strong>w Rosenblum, Tian Zhou, and Wang Guowei written <strong>for</strong> traditional Chinese and<br />

Western instruments. Activities will include an artist residency by Music From China's Long Wind Quartet (an<br />

ensemble of erhu, pipa, flute, and piano) at University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, as well as lectures,<br />

workshops, and educational programming <strong>for</strong> children and youth. Per<strong>for</strong>mances will be presented in New York<br />

venues such as <strong>the</strong> Chatham Square Library, Leonard Nimoy Thalia <strong>the</strong>ater at Symphony Space, and Christ & St.<br />

Stephen's Church.<br />

Music Mountain Incorporated (aka 2)<br />

$10,000 <strong>Fall</strong>s Village, CT<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> annual Music Mountain Summer Music Festival. Under <strong>the</strong> leadership of Artistic Director<br />

Jonathan Yates, programming will feature chamber ensembles and solo instrumentalists. Repertoire will range<br />

from traditional chamber repertoire to new music and jazz. Activities will include master classes and intensive<br />

week-long coaching workshops with participating chamber musicians. The festival concerts will be held in Music<br />

Mountain's Gordon Hall and will be recorded live and broadcast on <strong>the</strong> Music Mountain Radio Network.<br />

NARAS Foundation (aka The GRAMMY Foundation)<br />

$10,000 Santa Monica, CA<br />

To support GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session. NEA Jazz Master David Liebman will serve as honorary director of this<br />

multi-day program <strong>for</strong> as many as 30 high school vocalists and instrumentalists chosen from around <strong>the</strong> nation,<br />

and will participate in program instruction, mentoring sessions, and per<strong>for</strong>mances. Artistic Director Justin<br />

DiCioccio (Chair of Jazz Studies, Manhattan School of Music) will lead a student band; Ron McCurdy (Professor of<br />

Music, Thornton School of Music, University of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cali<strong>for</strong>nia) will lead a band and choir; and vocal coach<br />

Susanna Wegner also will participate in choir instruction. Students are expected to attend extensive rehearsals<br />

prior to per<strong>for</strong>ming at select public and invitation-only GRAMMY Week events. They may also participate in <strong>the</strong><br />

recording of an album, scheduled <strong>for</strong> commercial release, at <strong>the</strong> legendary Capitol Studios. During a College Day<br />

session, students will be able to meet campus representatives from preeminent music schools.<br />

Nashville Symphony Association (aka Nashville Symphony)<br />

$15,000 Nashville, TN<br />

To support a per<strong>for</strong>mance and recording project of an orchestral work by American composer Terry Riley. The<br />

orchestra and <strong>the</strong> guest artist, organist Cameron Carpenter under <strong>the</strong> direction of Music Director Giancarlo<br />

Guerrero, will record live per<strong>for</strong>mances of Riley's "At <strong>the</strong> Royal Majestic" concerto <strong>for</strong> organ and orchestra in<br />

Schermerhorn Symphony Center's Laura Turner Concert Hall. The recording will be produced by <strong>the</strong> Naxos label.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Symphony Orchestra Association of Washington, DC (aka N/A)<br />

$35,000 Washington, DC<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> In Your Neighborhood community engagement initiative. The orchestra will conduct a week-long<br />

artist residency in <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast/Southwest neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. Through <strong>the</strong> sixth In Your<br />

Neighborhood residency, <strong>the</strong> orchestra musicians will per<strong>for</strong>m full orchestral repertoire <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> community, as<br />

well as a number of chamber music concerts in schools, libraries, community centers, and per<strong>for</strong>ming arts<br />

spaces. Guest artists will join <strong>the</strong> orchestra in concert at larger venues such as THEARC. In addition, <strong>the</strong><br />

musicians will return to previously visited D.C. communities such as Columbia Heights, <strong>the</strong> U Street Corridor,<br />

NoMa, Capitol Hill, and Downtown/Penn Quarter.<br />
