A Public Space Literary Projects Inc. (aka A Public Space)<br />

$20,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support a mentorship program <strong>for</strong> emerging writers, as well as <strong>the</strong> publication and promotion of new books<br />

and <strong>the</strong> journal "A Public Space." In addition to receiving rigorous editorial guidance and publication in <strong>the</strong><br />

journal, selected emerging writers will give a public reading in New York City and have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to meet<br />

with members of <strong>the</strong> publishing community. The newly launched A Public Space Books will release titles from<br />

such authors as Bette Howland and Sally Potter, both of whom have been featured in previous issues of <strong>the</strong><br />

journal.<br />

Alice James Poetry Cooperative, Inc. (aka Alice James Books)<br />

$25,000 Farmington, ME<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> publication and promotion of new books of poetry. The press will publish books by authors<br />

Jennifer Chang, Alessandra Lynch, Elizabeth Lyons, Jill McDonough, Kristin Robertson, and Ellen Dore Watson, as<br />

well as a collection of multi-genre work by June Jordan. The press will involve authors in <strong>the</strong> book design and<br />

production process, and titles will be promoted via social media, <strong>the</strong> press's website, and through online and<br />

print advertising, among o<strong>the</strong>r means.<br />

Archipelago Books, Inc. (aka Archipelago Books)<br />

$80,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> translation, publication, and promotion of international literature, including titles <strong>for</strong> children.<br />

Planned books include fiction and nonfiction from countries such as Argentina, Bulgaria, Cuba, Spain, and South<br />

Africa, as well as illustrated children's books from Brazil, Norway, and France. Books will be distributed<br />

worldwide, and planned book tour events will feature authors and translators in readings and discussions at<br />

book festivals, cultural centers, and children's museums, among o<strong>the</strong>r locations.<br />

Aspect, Inc. (aka Zephyr Press)<br />

$10,000 Brookline, MA<br />

To support Zephyr Press in <strong>the</strong> publication and promotion of poetry titles in translation. Planned publications,<br />

which will be presented in bilingual <strong>for</strong>m, include work by Chinese and Polish poets such as Tadeusz Dabrowski,<br />

Jacek Dehnel, Zhang Er, Julia Fiedorczuk, and Ya Shi, most of whom have had little or no exposure in English.<br />

BOA Editions, Ltd.<br />

$20,000 Rochester, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> publication and promotion of books of contemporary poetry and short fiction in print and<br />

electronic <strong>for</strong>m, as well as <strong>the</strong> digitization of backlist titles. Among <strong>the</strong> books planned <strong>for</strong> publication are new<br />

titles by such authors as Reginald Gibbons, Christine Kitano, and Craig Morgan Teicher. Books will be promoted<br />

through social media, <strong>the</strong> press's website, e-mail marketing campaigns, author book tours, and literary<br />

conferences, among o<strong>the</strong>r means.<br />

Bamboo Ridge Press (aka Bamboo Ridge)<br />

$10,000 Honolulu, HI<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> publication and promotion of <strong>the</strong> journal "Bamboo Ridge." With a focus on literature by and<br />

about Hawaii's people, <strong>the</strong> project includes a planned "docu-poetry" issue with a collection of linked poetry<br />

about <strong>the</strong> 1932 murder of Native Hawaiian prize fighter Joseph Kahahawai. The press will publicize new issues<br />
