Sociedad Latina<br />

$10,000 Roxbury, MA<br />

To support staffing, guest artists, and administrative costs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual cultural event, Viva La Cultura,<br />

celebrating Latino Heritage Month. This community-wide event includes public art displays, musical<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances, cultural showcases, and guest artists who will visit <strong>the</strong> underserved community of Roxbury, with<br />

a predominantly African-American and Latino population. There will be local youth involved in <strong>the</strong> logistical<br />

planning and implementation of <strong>the</strong> events to teach work<strong>for</strong>ce readiness skills.<br />

South Bend Symphony Orchestra Association Inc (aka SBSO)<br />

$10,000 South Bend, IN<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> MLK Day Concert. The per<strong>for</strong>mance will include a full-orchestra concert that will be led by<br />

African-American conductors Dr. Marvin Curtis and Chelsea Tipton, and feature soloist Maria Sanderson - a<br />

Sphynx Competition-winning violinist - and <strong>the</strong> Olivet AME Church Choir. The concert will take place at South<br />

Bend's oldest African-American church. The program is designed to feature outstanding young Black or Latino<br />

musicians to promote diversity in symphony orchestras. The concert is <strong>the</strong> finale of <strong>the</strong> citywide celebration of<br />

Martin Lu<strong>the</strong>r King, Jr., Day.<br />

South Orange Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong> Center (aka SOPAC)<br />

$10,000 South Orange, NJ<br />

To support concerts featuring world music artists. The per<strong>for</strong>mances will be presented throughout <strong>the</strong> winter<br />

and spring season at <strong>the</strong> South Orange Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong> Center, located in <strong>the</strong> racially and economically diverse<br />

suburbs of Newark, New Jersey. Each per<strong>for</strong>mance will be followed by a facilitated discussion to give <strong>the</strong> artists<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to talk about <strong>the</strong>ir artistic journey and <strong>the</strong> sources of <strong>the</strong>ir musical inspiration.<br />

Su Teatro (aka Su Teatro Cultural and Per<strong>for</strong>ming <strong>Arts</strong> Center)<br />

$10,000 Denver, CO<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of <strong>the</strong> play "'57 Chevy" and corresponding workshops at <strong>the</strong> EVER Wordfest. Ric<br />

Salinas will portray all <strong>the</strong> characters in this play and also provide hands-on youth workshops; master class<br />

acting, movement, and storytelling instruction; and an open community workshop. Also, prior to <strong>the</strong><br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance, Su Teatro staff will visit each community partner organization to provide a free workshop. These<br />

opportunities will address <strong>the</strong> ongoing need to provide artistic programs serving Latino artists and audiences.<br />

Tapology Inc. (aka Tapology Dance Festival)<br />

$10,000 Mount Morris, MI<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Summer Tap Intensive and <strong>Fall</strong> Festival. Dance training <strong>for</strong> economically challenged youth will<br />

occur at Flint's Cultural Center Campus. The training will incorporate original works by guest artists, including<br />

Dianne Walker and Maurice Chestnut. The <strong>Fall</strong> Festival will include workshops and a final concert by <strong>the</strong> guest<br />

artists showcasing <strong>the</strong> newly trained youth per<strong>for</strong>mers.<br />

Texas State University - San Marcos<br />

$10,000 San Marcos, TX<br />

To support a per<strong>for</strong>mance of a bilingual adaptation of "The Comedy of Errors." The play will feature guest actors<br />

Julio Mella, Jesus Valles, and Eva McQuade, from <strong>the</strong> local Latino <strong>the</strong>ater community. The production was<br />

originally per<strong>for</strong>med as a pilot project, but will have added refinements of <strong>the</strong> script and staging. The marketing<br />

and public relations ef<strong>for</strong>ts will be expanded <strong>for</strong> this production in order to reach <strong>the</strong> local Spanish-speaking<br />

community.<br />

Some details of <strong>the</strong> projects listed are subject to change, contingent upon prior <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Endowment</strong> approval. In<strong>for</strong>mation is current as of<br />

December 7, 2016.
