University of Arkansas Main Campus<br />

$50,000 Fayetteville, AR<br />

To support Water and Wildness: Reimagining <strong>the</strong> Town Square as a Rain Terrain. The project team will develop a<br />

new type of urban town square that integrates wetlands-based stormwater treatment with urban land uses and<br />

an outdoor per<strong>for</strong>mance space. The square's landscape will be designed with a wide range of innovative<br />

stormwater treatment designs that call attention to environmental and ecological concerns. The project is a<br />

partnership between <strong>the</strong> University of Arkansas Community Design Center, City of Conway/Public Art Board, <strong>the</strong><br />

Ecological Design Group, <strong>the</strong> Pine Street Area Community Development Corporation, and <strong>the</strong> Lake Conway-Point<br />

Remove Watershed Alliance.<br />

University of Colorado at Boulder<br />

$20,000 Boulder, CO<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> teaching and inclusion of universal design (UD) into university curricula across <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />

Building on previous work to create and promote UD curriculum at <strong>the</strong> University of Colorado at Boulder (UCB),<br />

this project will share, expand, and promote <strong>the</strong>se resources to o<strong>the</strong>r post-secondary institutions nationally. UD<br />

is an approach to design that creates products, systems, and environments to be as usable as possible by as<br />

many people as possible regardless of age, ability, or situation. Through partnerships, UCB will create and<br />

disseminate resources, provide training and <strong>for</strong>ums, and expand strategic outreach, to increase <strong>the</strong> quality and<br />

number of courses addressing UD.<br />

University of Maryland Baltimore County Campus<br />

$30,000 Baltimore, MD<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> exhibition "A Designed Life: American Textiles, Wallpapers, Containers and Packaging (1951-52)."<br />

The exhibition designers will re-create one historically significant traveling exhibition from <strong>the</strong> early Cold War<br />

period. The original exhibition, created in 1951-52 by <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service in<br />

collaboration with <strong>the</strong> U .S. Department of State, was displayed throughout West Germany. The project will<br />

explore <strong>the</strong> concepts of mid-century American design and modernity through a display of textiles by product<br />

designers, many of whom are associated with American modernism.<br />

University of Oregon<br />

$20,000 Eugene, OR<br />

To support Unparalleled, a week-long series of educational workshops, lectures, and exhibitions featuring<br />

product design in Oregon. Hosted by <strong>the</strong> Department of Product Design at <strong>the</strong> University of Oregon, <strong>the</strong><br />

program offers free educational experiences to design novices through design professionals, with <strong>the</strong> aim of<br />

empowering people to actively engage through design in making life more livable, functional, and beautiful.<br />

Van Alen Institute: Projects in Public Architecture (aka Van Alen Institute)<br />

$50,000 New York, NY<br />

To support Van Alen Sessions film series. The short films will use narrative filmmaking to examine vital issues<br />

facing cities and <strong>the</strong> public realm, covering a broad range of topics that relate to <strong>the</strong> livability of cities, such as<br />

tunnels and power lines. The program will investigate how cities change over time and shape our routines and<br />

relationships, telling <strong>the</strong> stories of people who are affected by cities on a daily basis, alongside insight from<br />

experts. The videos in <strong>the</strong> series will be created in partnership with filmmakers and architects, artists, and urban<br />
