Young Audiences/New York, Inc. (aka yaNY)<br />
$10,000 New York, NY<br />
To support a series of per<strong>for</strong>mances based on Ralph Ellison's literature, and related activities. The project will<br />
provide <strong>the</strong> communities of Harlem and <strong>the</strong> Bronx with cultural programming that addresses <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes of<br />
racism, art, and social change, as well as <strong>the</strong> American dream. All per<strong>for</strong>mances will take place at Harlem Stage,<br />
including offerings <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> public and <strong>for</strong> students. Additional project activities will include discussion <strong>for</strong>ums, art<br />
residencies teaching monologue writing in participating schools. The events will be free and open to <strong>the</strong> public,<br />
and feature guest artist Lemon Andersen, a per<strong>for</strong>mance artist, playwright, and actor.<br />
Youth Orchestras of Fresno<br />
$10,000 Fresno, CA<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> commissioning of "Coming Home," a large-scale orchestral inspired by <strong>the</strong> work of Fresno native<br />
William Saroyan. Composers will incorporate audience members' stories of home into <strong>the</strong> final full-orchestra<br />
per<strong>for</strong>mance. Exploring <strong>the</strong> meaning of home pieces will be composed <strong>for</strong> breakout per<strong>for</strong>mances in nontraditional<br />
spaces, giving accessibility <strong>for</strong> different audiences to engage and interact. The culminating event will<br />
incorporate collected and recorded stories about home, including immigrant experiences ga<strong>the</strong>red from <strong>the</strong><br />
preceding breakout per<strong>for</strong>mances, which will be weaved into <strong>the</strong> final per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />
Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (aka YOSA)<br />
$10,000 San Antonio, TX<br />
To support Mozart at <strong>the</strong> Opera. Soprano Blake Hill and baritone Zachary Gordin will visit local high school choirs<br />
to work with student singers and invite <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> culminating concert, with a focus on underserved,<br />
economically disadvantaged schools in <strong>the</strong> San Antonio area. Additional project activities will include choir<br />
residencies at local high schools, reaching at-risk students. The final concert will feature <strong>the</strong> guest soloists with<br />
<strong>the</strong> Youth Orchestra of San Antonio. Selections from "The Magic Flute," "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don<br />
Giovanni," and Cesar Franck's "Symphony in D minor" will be per<strong>for</strong>med.<br />
