University of Alabama at Birmingham<br />

$20,000 Birmingham, AL<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of dance companies. Companies may include Alonzo King LINES Ballet, MOMIX, and<br />

Ballet Hispanico. Each will present public per<strong>for</strong>mances along with multiple community engagement activities<br />

such as pre-per<strong>for</strong>mance talks, master classes, lectures, design and technical workshops, and per<strong>for</strong>mances <strong>for</strong><br />

students. Per<strong>for</strong>mances will take place at <strong>the</strong> University of Alabama at Birmingham's Alys Stephens Center.<br />

Vail Valley Foundation (aka Vail International Dance Festival)<br />

$10,000 Vail, CO<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> 29th Vail International Dance Festival. Continuing a legacy of presenting dance from both<br />

established and emerging choreographers, Artistic Director Damian Woetzel will curate <strong>the</strong> festival. For two<br />

weeks, <strong>the</strong> city of Vail will experience per<strong>for</strong>mances by resident professional companies encompassing neoclassical,<br />

classical, and contemporary works. Accompanying community events such as workshops, master<br />

classes, and discussions will round out <strong>the</strong> festival offerings.<br />

Virginia <strong>Arts</strong> Festival, Inc. (aka Virginia <strong>Arts</strong> Festival)<br />

$10,000 Norfolk, VA<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Virginia <strong>Arts</strong> Festival's <strong>2017</strong> Dance Series: Celebrate, Discover, and Learn. The series will feature<br />

Mark Morris Dance Group, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Richard Alston Dance Company, and Urban Bush<br />

Women. Residency components will include public per<strong>for</strong>mances, a celebration and exploration of African-<br />

American dance, master classes, and mentoring local dancers of all ages and abilities. Events will take place in<br />

Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia.<br />

Visions In Rhythm (aka Tapestry Dance Company)<br />

$10,000 Austin, TX<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> 17th annual Soul to Sole Festival, a national education and per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> art of tap<br />

dance. Tapestry Dance Company will invite a wide range of dancers from around <strong>the</strong> United States and abroad<br />

to participate in master classes, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, an artist/faculty concert, a participant<br />

showcase, video screenings, and tap improvisational jams. Festival faculty will host an intensive to discuss and<br />

document issues facing current tap dance artists. This intensive also will involve <strong>the</strong> preservation, study, and<br />

documentation of classic and historical choreographic works and/or techniques.<br />

Wesleyan University<br />

$30,000 Middletown, CT<br />

To support Wesleyan University's Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>' Breaking Ground Dance Series (BGDS). BGDS will feature<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances and residency activities on campus and in <strong>the</strong> community by Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Group, Company Wayne McGregor, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, and The Seldoms. In addition, <strong>the</strong><br />

center will host a series of master classes and choreographer conversations on <strong>the</strong> state of contemporary dance<br />

as part of <strong>the</strong> DanceMasters weekend series. The Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> will partner with Wesleyan's Dance<br />

Department and a subcommittee of <strong>the</strong>ir faculty and students to select <strong>the</strong> companies and plan <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

residencies.<br />
