provide a modern lens to explore <strong>the</strong> role of women in contemporary society. Educational and outreach<br />

programming will include in-school residencies <strong>for</strong> high school students who will lead readings and discussions<br />

<strong>for</strong> local residents in partnership with public libraries and bookstores.<br />

Miracle Theatre Group (aka Milagro)<br />

$10,000 Portland, OR<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and premiere of "Oye, Oya!" Inspired by <strong>the</strong> traditions of <strong>the</strong> 20th-century Cuban<br />

Zarzuela (Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes), <strong>the</strong> Spanish-language<br />

musical will explore <strong>the</strong> contemporary Cuban and Cuban expatriate experience. Oye, Oya! will portray <strong>the</strong><br />

duality of Havana nightlife-a government sanctioned tourist nightspot in contrast with an underground<br />

suppressed Cuban club. Cuban musicians and club workers will interface with tourists, both Cuban Americans<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>for</strong>eigners, who have come to <strong>the</strong> island in search of profit. Cuban Americans Rebecca Martinez will<br />

write <strong>the</strong> libretto and Rodolfo Ortega will compose <strong>the</strong> score.<br />

Mixed Blood Theatre Company (aka Mixed Blood)<br />

$40,000 Minneapolis, MN<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> premiere of "Safe at Home" by Gabe Greene and Alex Levy. Baseball is used as a vehicle in <strong>the</strong><br />

play to examine and reveal U.S. immigration policies and Major League Baseball's exploitation of Dominican<br />

players. Racial politics in <strong>the</strong> United States and <strong>the</strong> country's obsession with "celebrity" are investigated through<br />

<strong>the</strong> story's collision of ethics with massive entertainment and media dollars. The site-specific production will<br />

take place at CHS Field, <strong>the</strong> new minor league stadium and home of <strong>the</strong> St. Paul Saints, in St. Paul, Minnesota.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Alliance <strong>for</strong> Musical Theatre, Inc.<br />

$55,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Annual Festival of New Musicals and <strong>Fall</strong> Conference. An annual ga<strong>the</strong>ring of writers and<br />

producers from <strong>the</strong> musical <strong>the</strong>ater industry, <strong>the</strong> festival consists of staged readings, a songwriters' showcase,<br />

and ongoing developmental support <strong>for</strong> new musical <strong>the</strong>ater works. The festival and conference are designed to<br />

benefit actors, writers, directors, and musicians by giving <strong>the</strong>m access to producers and <strong>the</strong>ater executives,<br />

along with <strong>the</strong> resources and expertise to develop and produce <strong>the</strong>ir work.<br />

<strong>National</strong> Music Theatre Network, Inc. (aka New York Musical Festival)<br />

$10,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> New York Musical Festival's professional development programs <strong>for</strong> emerging musical <strong>the</strong>ater<br />

composers and writers. Through <strong>the</strong> Next Link Project and Developmental Readings Series, creative teams will<br />

participate in developmental workshops and receive artistic, dramaturgical, and financial support to bring new<br />

musicals to <strong>the</strong> stage. The festival will present new works in full productions and staged readings at Off-<br />

Broadway <strong>the</strong>aters. Emerging writing teams will collaborate with established musical <strong>the</strong>ater artists to provide<br />

guidance on musical structure, artistic choices, and best avenues <strong>for</strong> development.<br />

New 42nd Street, Inc.<br />

$30,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> presentation of national and international works of <strong>the</strong>ater <strong>for</strong> young audiences at <strong>the</strong> New<br />

Victory Theater. Works to be presented may include "The Way Back Home" by Teater Refleksion (Arhus,<br />

Denmark); "Caesar X/Julius Caesar" by The Acting Company (New York, New York); "Nivelli's War" by Cahoots NI<br />

(Belfast, Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland); and "Aging Magician," produced by Beth Morrison Projects and VisionIntoTalent<br />
