<strong>National</strong> Council <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Traditional <strong>Arts</strong> (aka NCTA)<br />

$50,000 Silver Spring, MD<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> Folk Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina. The free public festival will offer<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances of a wide array of traditional music such as blues, gospel, jazz, polka, cowboy, bluegrass, klezmer,<br />

old-time, Cajun, rhythm-and-blues, mariachi, western swing, and zydeco. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> festival's folklife area<br />

will be devoted exclusively to <strong>the</strong> traditions of <strong>the</strong> host city's Piedmont region and will offer music, storytelling,<br />

craft demonstrations, as well as regional and ethnic foods prepared by community members.<br />

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, Inc. (aka New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation)<br />

$40,000 New Orleans, LA<br />

To support artists fees <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival. Staged in downtown New Orleans, <strong>the</strong> festival<br />

will celebrate <strong>the</strong> blues tradition of Louisiana and <strong>the</strong> Delta South. In addition to musical per<strong>for</strong>mances from<br />

renowned blues artists, such as Little Freddie King and NEA <strong>National</strong> Heritage Fellow Henry Gray, noted musical<br />

scholars will interview select musicians on <strong>the</strong> narrative stage.<br />

Obey Foundation, Inc.<br />

$20,000 Charlotte, NC<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Drums 4 Life Program. Incarcerated youth will receive instruction in West African drumming<br />

techniques and drum construction, as well as learn about <strong>the</strong> historical and cultural origin of <strong>the</strong> various drums.<br />

As a culminating event, <strong>the</strong> students will participate in a per<strong>for</strong>mance and have <strong>the</strong>ir drum music professionally<br />

recorded. Upon <strong>the</strong>ir release, <strong>the</strong> participants will receive <strong>the</strong> drum <strong>the</strong>y assembled and a copy of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

recording.<br />

Pachamama Peruvian <strong>Arts</strong> (aka Pachamama or PPA)<br />

$20,000 New York, NY<br />

To support master artists providing instruction in traditional music and dance from Peru. Students will learn<br />

dances including <strong>the</strong> "Zamba Malato" and <strong>the</strong> "Marinera Nortena," as well as songs in both Spanish and<br />

Qechwa, <strong>the</strong> language of indigenous Peruvians. Additionally, classes about traditional Peruvian musical<br />

instruments-such as <strong>the</strong> "cajo" (box drum), <strong>the</strong> "zampona" (panpipes), and "charango" (a guitar-like instrument)-<br />

will be offered. Instruction will be designed <strong>for</strong> beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, and will<br />

conclude with per<strong>for</strong>mance opportunities <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> students. The project is open to all students, but has a focus<br />

on <strong>the</strong> youth of New York City's Peruvian immigrant community.<br />

Pennsylvania State University Main Campus (aka Penn State) (On behalf of WPSU)<br />

$10,000 University Park, PA<br />

To support Pennsylvania Legends and Lore, a WPSU broadcast and multimedia project to engage new audiences.<br />

A television program, with accompanying online educational material, will be produced celebrating <strong>the</strong> state's<br />

traditional textile arts. Artists featured in <strong>the</strong> broadcast may include Tina Williams Brewer, an African-American<br />

quilter; Antonella DiIanni, an artist specializing in Italian bobbin-lace; and Ukrainian weaver and NEA <strong>National</strong><br />

Heritage Fellow Vera Nakonechny.<br />

Philadelphia Folklore Project<br />

$70,000 Philadelphia, PA<br />

To support Folk <strong>Arts</strong> and Social Change Residencies. A series of exhibits and residences will explore <strong>the</strong><br />

trans<strong>for</strong>mative role of folk arts in society. The exhibits will feature vernacular expressions of faith. The artist<br />
