Corporation of <strong>the</strong> Fine <strong>Arts</strong> Museums (aka Fine <strong>Arts</strong> Museums of San Francisco)<br />

To support "Stuart Davis: In Full Swing," and related educational and public programming. Co-organized by <strong>the</strong><br />
Whitney Museum of American Art and <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> Gallery of Art, <strong>the</strong> traveling exhibition pays tribute to Stuart<br />
Davis (1892-1964), one of <strong>the</strong> most important innovators in <strong>the</strong> evolution of American modernism and<br />
abstraction. With approximately 75 works on display, ranging from his early paintings of commercial products<br />
from <strong>the</strong> 1920s, to <strong>the</strong> canvas that was on his easel at <strong>the</strong> time of his death, <strong>the</strong> exhibition highlights Davis's<br />
unique ability to assimilate pop culture influences-<strong>the</strong> aes<strong>the</strong>tics of advertising and <strong>the</strong> rhythms of jazz-with <strong>the</strong><br />
lessons of Cubism. The de Young will be <strong>the</strong> only exhibition venue west of <strong>the</strong> Mississippi. Comprehensive public<br />
programming at <strong>the</strong> de Young is planned to complement <strong>the</strong> exhibition, including a month-long residency <strong>for</strong> a<br />
local artist.<br />
Currier Museum of Art<br />
$15,000 Manchester, NH<br />
To support "Soo Sunny Park: BioLath." Artist Soo Sunny Park (b. 1975) will create a large-scale, site-specific<br />
installation out of Plexiglas and metal to investigate light, color, and visual perceptions. Installed in <strong>the</strong> Currier's<br />
large, light-filled gallery, Park will make more than 50 self-standing, organic <strong>for</strong>ms that take on natural<br />
associations, such as human organs or boulders. Park will lead a workshop <strong>for</strong> children and will receive<br />
assistance from local college students on <strong>the</strong> installation. Tours, hands-on activities <strong>for</strong> families, and a small, free<br />
exhibition catalogue will complement <strong>the</strong> exhibition.<br />
Denver Art Museum (aka Denver Art Museum)<br />
$45,000 Denver, CO<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> exhibition, "The Western: An Epic in Art and Film." The exhibition will feature more than 120<br />
paintings, illustrations, film stills, and o<strong>the</strong>r objects that examine <strong>the</strong> visual culture that led to <strong>for</strong>mation of <strong>the</strong><br />
"myth of <strong>the</strong> West." The content of <strong>the</strong> exhibition will show how <strong>the</strong> West was presented to <strong>the</strong> nation and <strong>the</strong><br />
world through <strong>the</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>ts of artists from <strong>the</strong> mid-19th century to <strong>the</strong> present. Thematic sections will introduce<br />
landscapes from artists Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran; photographers Timothy O'Sullivan and Carleton E.<br />
Watkins; and magazine illustrations by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Representations of race and<br />
gender also will be explored with key images and clips from period films juxtaposed with contemporaneous<br />
works by artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. A panel discussion, and a catalogue will accompany <strong>the</strong><br />
exhibition.<br />
Denver Botanic Gardens, Inc. (aka Denver Botanic Gardens)<br />
$45,000 Denver, CO<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> exhibition of works by Alexander Calder and accompanying catalogue. A partnership with <strong>the</strong><br />
Calder Foundation, <strong>the</strong> exhibition will feature approximately 10 large-scale outdoor sculptures by Calder (1898-<br />
1976). Sculptures that demonstrate signature Calder <strong>for</strong>ms and color will be on loan from <strong>the</strong> Calder Foundation<br />
Collection, museums, and private collections, including "Funghi Neri" (1957), "Janey Waney" (1969), "Tripes"<br />
(1974), and "Giant Critter" (1976). Lectures, family workshops, docent tours, film screenings, school tours, and a<br />
web application that offers a free bilingual smartphone interface will be among <strong>the</strong> programs available <strong>for</strong><br />
visitors. The museum will provide docents with additional training to accommodate visitors with special needs<br />
to offer hands-on experiences <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> visually impaired.<br />
