Brooklyn Academy of Music, Inc. (aka Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM))<br />

$40,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Next Wave Festival and related activities. The festival will feature new work by artists working in<br />

all disciplines. Proposed works include opera conductor, poet, and musician Mat<strong>the</strong>w Aucoin's exploration of<br />

Walt Whitman's Civil War diary; a dance by ODC Dance inspired by visual artist Andy Goldsworthy with a live<br />

score by cellist Zoe Keating; and Ivo van Hove's <strong>the</strong>atrical interpretation of Ayn Rand's novel, "The<br />

Fountainhead." BAM will present as many as three productions <strong>for</strong> New York City high school students, as well<br />

as provide pre-show workshops in <strong>the</strong>ir classrooms.<br />

Builders Association, Inc. (aka The Builders Association)<br />

$20,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> touring of "Elements of Oz" and related activities. The multimedia per<strong>for</strong>mance piece is based on<br />

a mash-up of texts including excerpts from <strong>the</strong> original "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" book by L. Frank Baum<br />

and testimonials from fans about <strong>the</strong>ir various interpretations of <strong>the</strong> classic film. These conversations range<br />

from discussions with <strong>the</strong> Friends of Dorothy fanclub, to <strong>the</strong> influence of debates over <strong>the</strong> gold standard in <strong>the</strong><br />

1880s, to using Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of <strong>the</strong> Moon" as <strong>the</strong> movie soundtrack. Using a simple stage set and<br />

three per<strong>for</strong>mers, this production uses both traditional stagecraft and mixed media technology.<br />

Cedar Cultural Center, Inc. (aka The Cedar)<br />

$10,000 Minneapolis, MN<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Global Roots Festival and related activities. Global Roots will present live music rooted in various<br />

cultural traditions per<strong>for</strong>med by international artists. Per<strong>for</strong>mers will include <strong>the</strong> Mizrahi hip-hop sisters A-WA<br />

(Israel)? traditional "carimbo" singer Dona Onete (Brazil); and The Stelios Petrakis Quartet (Greece), whose<br />

members include master instrumentalists and a traditional Cretan dancer.<br />

Circus of <strong>the</strong> Star (aka Circus Juventas)<br />

$20,000 Saint Paul, MN<br />

To support a per<strong>for</strong>ming arts series and related activities. Norse Mythological Tales will immerse Circus<br />

Juventas-trained per<strong>for</strong>mers in <strong>the</strong> culture, music, costuming, and traditions of medieval Scandinavia. The<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances will blend storytelling with circus arts, incorporating narrative, <strong>the</strong>me, dance, and character<br />

development.<br />

City Parks Foundation (aka CPF)<br />

$40,000 New York, NY<br />

To support SummerStage, a series of multidisciplinary per<strong>for</strong>mances and related activities. Concerts,<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances, and events will be held in Central Park and at o<strong>the</strong>r parks in all five boroughs. The per<strong>for</strong>mances<br />

will be programmed by curators who specialize in music, dance, <strong>the</strong>ater, and children's programming.<br />

College of Saint Benedict (On behalf of Fine <strong>Arts</strong> Programming)<br />

$15,000 St. Joseph, MN<br />

To support per<strong>for</strong>mances and residencies with multidisciplinary artists. In addition to per<strong>for</strong>ming, Step Afrika!,<br />

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, and <strong>the</strong> Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will engage underserved audiences, including<br />

wounded veterans and socioeconomically-challenged youth. The Brass Ensemble will give a brass master class<br />

<strong>for</strong> local high school and college students and <strong>the</strong> Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars will host an open workshop<br />

exploring <strong>the</strong> current situation of refugees globally.<br />

Dance Theatre Etcetera, Inc. (aka N/A)<br />
