Community Adolescent Resources and Education Center (aka The Care Center)<br />
$10,000 Holyoke, MA<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Readers and Writers Series, developed in collaboration with <strong>the</strong> Smith College Poetry Center. The<br />
Care Center's services focus on young parents, and its clientele includes predominantly low-income families of<br />
Puerto Rican descent. The project will engage this population by providing books by featured writers and<br />
facilitating book discussions in advance of public readings by each of <strong>the</strong> guest artists. Guest artists will include<br />
writers and poets Ellen Bass, John Murillo, Marilyn Chin, Lauren Schmidt, Martin Espada, and Ansel Elkins.<br />
Cotuit Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (aka The Center)<br />
$10,000 Cotuit, MA<br />
To support My Pet Project, a program culminating in <strong>the</strong> creation of a public art project to be installed on Cape<br />
Cod. Local artists working with people with disabilities will lead a series of art classes. The students will <strong>the</strong>n<br />
participate in <strong>the</strong> creation of a mosaic totem sculpture of pet animals. Tessa D'Agostino, professional artist and<br />
mosaic director, will lead <strong>the</strong> public art project. The completed artwork will be installed at <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts<br />
Society <strong>for</strong> Prevention and Cruelty to Animals.<br />
Creede Repertory Theatre, Inc. (aka Creede Rep, CRT)<br />
$10,000 Creede, CO<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Young Audience Outreach Tour. A new work by guest artist Mfoniso Udofia, a Nigerian-American<br />
playwright, will be produced and toured to rural and underserved communities in multiple states such as<br />
Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Oklahoma, and Arizona. Udofia will be involved in <strong>the</strong> creation of a children's book<br />
to accompany <strong>the</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />
Dallas Black Dance Theatre<br />
$10,000 Dallas, TX<br />
To support Spring Celebration, a contemporary ballet per<strong>for</strong>mance, with associated activities. Guest artist and<br />
Ballet Austin Artistic Director Stephen Mills will choreograph a new work. The piece will be per<strong>for</strong>med by Dallas<br />
Black Dance Theatre, with guest artist dancers from Ballet Austin. Audiences will include <strong>the</strong> city's African-<br />
American community. Additional project activities will include events such as a question-and-answer session<br />
with <strong>the</strong> artists and a post-per<strong>for</strong>mance onstage dance party.<br />
Davenport Theatrical<br />
$10,000 Davenport, WA<br />
To support <strong>the</strong> Guest Artist Program, bringing professional <strong>the</strong>ater artists to rural Lincoln County, Washington.<br />
Proposed guest artists include director Lee Mikeska Gardner, costume designer Leslie Stamoolis, and two actors<br />
to be cast. The guest artists will mentor and work alongside local volunteers to present a production of<br />
"Oklahoma." The project will offer <strong>the</strong>ater training <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> volunteers as well as <strong>the</strong>ater workshops <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
public.<br />
Eastern Shore of Virginia Barrier Islands Center (aka Barrier Islands Center)<br />
$10,000 Machipongo, VA<br />
To support music per<strong>for</strong>mances and workshops at <strong>the</strong> Art and Music on <strong>the</strong> Farm festival. The featured musical<br />
artists will represent regional styles such as gospel, bluegrass, traditional Appalachian, and Piedmont blues. The<br />
proposed guest artists include Larnell Starkey and <strong>the</strong> Spiritual Seven Gospel Singers, Mark Campbell, Robin and<br />
Linda Williams and Their Fine Group, Dale Jett and Hello Stranger, and Gregg Kimball. The musicians will each<br />
provide a mainstage per<strong>for</strong>mance and participate in a workshop at <strong>the</strong> festival, taking place in a rural setting.<br />
Some details of <strong>the</strong> projects listed are subject to change, contingent upon prior <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Endowment</strong> approval. In<strong>for</strong>mation is current as of<br />
