Virginia Johnson and journalism students, a panel discussion between Dianne McIntyre and scholars from <strong>the</strong><br />

Humanities Center on societal issues inspiring McIntyre's work, and workshops with Tri-C's Creative <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Academy's Dance Ensemble students and Cleveland's Inner City Ballet company. Events will take place in and<br />

around downtown Cleveland.<br />

DOVA, Inc. (aka Doug Varone and Dancers)<br />

$40,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation of a new work by Artistic Director Doug Varone in collaboration with director/playwright<br />

Eric Simonson. The new work is partially inspired by physicist Douglas Hofstader's book, "I Am a Strange Loop."<br />

Varone and Simonson will use Hofstader's text as inspiration <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> non-verbal screenplay of a silent film-style<br />

drama, danced live onstage by an intergenerational company of dancers. The silent film era look will be achieved<br />

by black-and-white costuming and innovative projection designs (including title cards representing dialogue) by<br />

Wendall Harrington, and fur<strong>the</strong>r enhanced by a bi-level set built by David Zinn. The work will be developed in<br />

rehearsals in New York City and during residencies throughout New York State.<br />

Dance Continuum, Inc. (aka Susan Marshall & Company)<br />

$20,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> creation and presentation of "Background Patterns," a new multidisciplinary work by Artistic<br />

Director Susan Marshall. The choreographer will return to <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m of her earliest works, which include intricate<br />

duets in which relationships of power and intimacy emerge out of repeated simple gestures and movements.<br />

Marshall will develop <strong>the</strong> work in collaboration with composer Jason Treuting and musical ensemble So<br />

Percussion through a series of workshops and residencies hosted by <strong>the</strong> Lewis Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, American<br />

Dance Institute, and POP-UP. The artists intend to pursue a very transparent creative process, with public<br />

showings and engagement activities during each residency of <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

Dance Films Association, Inc. (aka DFA)<br />

$10,000 Brooklyn, NY<br />

To support Dance Films Association's Dance on Camera Festival (DOCF) and Dance on Camera Tour. The festival,<br />

co-presented with <strong>the</strong> Film Society of Lincoln Center, will include film programming that explores <strong>the</strong> broad<br />

spectrum of dance film from around <strong>the</strong> world. It will present feature films and shorts collections, a competition,<br />

Capturing Motion NYC <strong>for</strong> high-school students, and a Meet-<strong>the</strong>-Artist series. The Dance on Camera Tour will<br />

bring shorts and feature films from <strong>the</strong> New York-based festival to venues around <strong>the</strong> world. Film festival<br />

presenters, arts venues, and educators will have <strong>the</strong> ability to curate from <strong>the</strong> DOCF archival collection to<br />

present films specifically relevant to <strong>the</strong>ir missions and to <strong>the</strong>ir audiences.<br />

Dance Saint Louis (aka Dance St. Louis)<br />

$20,000 Saint Louis, MO<br />

To support dance presentations and related activities including New Dance Horizons and <strong>the</strong> Spring to Dance<br />

Festival. New Dance Horizons will focus on <strong>the</strong> influences of modern female leaders in <strong>the</strong> field of dance.<br />

Prominent American Artistic Directors Stephanie Martinez, Wendy Rein, and Amy Seiwert will collaborate with<br />

local dance companies and female composers <strong>for</strong> new works that will debut in St. Louis. The Spring to Dance<br />

Festival (STDF) will offer several nights of different and adjudicated programming, featuring various genres of<br />

dance. The Young Choreographers program is part of STDF and promotes original work of emerging<br />

choreographers in <strong>the</strong> region as well local dancers.<br />

Dance Service New York City, Inc. (aka Dance/NYC)<br />

$20,000 New York, NY<br />
