$40,000 Minneapolis, MN<br />

To support Design Futures Public Interest Design Student Leadership Forum <strong>2017</strong>. The project is a <strong>for</strong>um to<br />

introduce future design leaders to current leaders in <strong>the</strong> Public Interest Design (PID) field. At each <strong>for</strong>um,<br />

students participate in a series of workshops that allow <strong>the</strong>m to apply <strong>the</strong> skills <strong>the</strong>y are learning in real time,<br />

and visit local examples of PID to see how <strong>the</strong>se projects manifest in communities. Design Futures is part of a<br />

broader ef<strong>for</strong>t to support <strong>the</strong> maturation of <strong>the</strong> PID field and to respond to <strong>the</strong> significant demand <strong>for</strong> related<br />

cross-disciplinary training.<br />

Santa Fe Art Institute (aka SFAI)<br />

$30,000 Santa Fe, NM<br />

To support SFAI Design Workshop. Taking place in Santa Fe and at Santo Domingo Pueblo, this college<br />

preparatory summer program introduces high school students (primarily from underserved communities) to <strong>the</strong><br />

practice of designing <strong>for</strong> social good through art, architecture, design, and community engagement. Students<br />

spend time in <strong>the</strong> design studio and explore social and cultural issues related to <strong>the</strong> built environment through<br />

different case studies that address a specific community problem. Students also receive mentoring and<br />

professional development during <strong>the</strong> workshop and throughout <strong>the</strong> following academic year.<br />

St. John Community Foundation, Inc.<br />

$20,000 St. John, VI<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> design of Foundation Park. Through a public request <strong>for</strong> proposals, designers and artists will be<br />

engaged to design <strong>the</strong> park's entrance features, interpretive signage, seating areas, and commissioned artwork.<br />

The park is being designed to honor <strong>the</strong> <strong>2017</strong> Centennial celebration of <strong>the</strong> transfer of <strong>the</strong> Virgin Islands to <strong>the</strong><br />

United States, and will honor <strong>the</strong> five distinct cultures that have influenced <strong>the</strong> island's development.<br />

Storefront <strong>for</strong> Community Design (aka Storefront)<br />

$30,000 Richmond, VA<br />

To support Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion. This national design competition, held by<br />

Storefront <strong>for</strong> Community Design and The Middle of Broad Studio, will seek submissions reconsidering<br />

Richmond's Monument Avenue. The goal of <strong>the</strong> competition is to promote constructive dialogue, racial healing,<br />

and community education as it re-examines Richmond's confederate monuments, and to generate a<br />

communitywide discussion about <strong>the</strong> role of design in creating a socially just environment. A concurrent local<br />

competition will provide youth with an opportunity to design speculative monuments.<br />

Tiny WPA<br />

$20,000 Philadelphia, PA<br />

To support The Building Hero Project. Project staff provide youth and adults from diverse social and economic<br />

backgrounds with innovative, weekly year-round training in design, collaboration, leadership, fabrication, and<br />

entrepreneurship. The training is action-oriented and product-driven, addressing a particular need or problem<br />

with a specific designed solution (i.e., <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> a place to sit down results in a bench). The project connects<br />

and empowers its multigenerational participants to be catalysts, builders, and change agents in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

communities throughout Philadelphia.<br />

Toledo Museum of Art (aka TMA)<br />

$40,000 Toledo, OH<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> exhibition "Chandeliers - Innovation Illuminated." The exhibition will explore <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

<strong>the</strong> chandelier as a central, suspended light source built <strong>for</strong> interiors and illustrate <strong>the</strong> cultural context and<br />

technology of chandeliers from antiquity to today, as well as its future role in environmentally responsible<br />
