To support a series of multidisciplinary per<strong>for</strong>mances and related activities. A mixed-genre per<strong>for</strong>mance,<br />

"Invisible: Imprints of Racism," will combine modern and street dancers with professional poets to examine<br />

issues of race in urban America. Teenagers from high poverty neighborhoods in Baltimore, Boston, New York<br />

City, and Providence will participate in one- to two-week workshops with <strong>the</strong> company. They will explore <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own experiences with race and shape <strong>the</strong>m into stories using dance and spoken-word.<br />

Apollo Theater Foundation (aka Apollo Theater)<br />

$30,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Women of <strong>the</strong> World Festival and related activities. A partnership with London's Southbank<br />

Centre, <strong>the</strong> festival will be a multi-day event exploring issues facing women around <strong>the</strong> world. Events will<br />

include concerts, comedy shows, a town hall focused on girls, and panel discussions. The highlight of <strong>the</strong> festival<br />

will be a concert honoring artist/activist and 2003 NEA Jazz Master Abbey Lincoln (1930-2010). The tribute<br />

concert will feature female jazz artists such as Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington, as well as <strong>2017</strong> NEA<br />

Jazz Master Dee Bridgewater.<br />

Artown<br />

$25,000 Reno, NV<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Artown festival. More than 50 artists and per<strong>for</strong>mers will be presented at Artown, a free<br />

multidisciplinary arts festival in Reno, Nevada.<br />

<strong>Arts</strong> Are Essential, Inc.<br />

$10,000 Acton, MA<br />

To support animation components <strong>for</strong> a per<strong>for</strong>mance project and related activities. <strong>Arts</strong> Are Essential will<br />

commission artist Kseniya Simonova to add sand animation and <strong>the</strong> duo of Jan Koester and Sonja Rohleder to<br />

add digital shadow puppetry to "Tales from <strong>the</strong> Forgotten Kingdom." Through <strong>the</strong> use of traditional songs and<br />

stories, sung in <strong>the</strong> endangered language Ladino, <strong>the</strong> multidisciplinary <strong>the</strong>ater piece will bring attention to<br />

Sephardic communities from <strong>the</strong> Balkans and Mediterranean decimated in World War II.<br />

<strong>Arts</strong> <strong>for</strong> Art, Inc. (aka AFA)<br />

$20,000 New York, NY<br />

To support <strong>the</strong> Vision Festival, a jazz and multidisciplinary arts festival, and related activities. The week-long<br />

festival will include dance, spoken-word, music, and visual arts, with an emphasis on jazz. Most of <strong>the</strong> artists<br />

who will per<strong>for</strong>m work within <strong>the</strong> improvisational free jazz aes<strong>the</strong>tic. Proposed artists include: Yoshiko Chuma,<br />

Ravi Coltrane, Mil<strong>for</strong>d Graves, Mary Halvorson, Joe McPhee, Nicole Mitchell, Joe Morris, William Parker, Mike<br />

Reed, Tomeka Reid, Mat<strong>the</strong>w Shipp, Jen Shyu, and Steve Swell.<br />

<strong>Arts</strong>pace Projects, Inc. (aka <strong>Arts</strong>pace)<br />

$30,000 Minneapolis, MN<br />

To support Art Bridge. The program uses multimedia technology to facilitate artistic collaboration, arts<br />

education, and public per<strong>for</strong>mance. In this pilot program, <strong>the</strong> Alaska Native Heritage Center in Juneau and <strong>the</strong><br />

Pregones Theater/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater in New York City will create a single artistic product through<br />

<strong>the</strong> use of multimedia technology. A per<strong>for</strong>mance in real-time will be hosted at each organization and available<br />

online to artists working in <strong>Arts</strong>pace properties across <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
