KOREA DPR On Dec 15 I heard on 4450 kHz from sign on at 2157 UT
presumably Korean National Democratic Front with Korean announcements and
later usual opera music. Reception was relatively good, becoming better
until 2300 UT.
LIBYA 17725 Voice of Africa, at 1553-1608 UT on Dec 12, woman announcer
with English news about African leaders with ID at 1559 followed by
instrumental music. Close of English program at 1601 UT by man with ID
followed by opening of French broadcast. Poor to fair with deep fades.
MADAGASCAR 5010 (nominal) R. Malagasy on Dec 17 w/ surprisingly nice
signal here at 0232 tune with non-stop local highlife mx to 0256.5, into
IS until 0258 then kind of random local inst music segments to 0300 then
played a choral anthem to 0301.5 then opening anmts by man in Malagasy and
French. Programming followed in Malagasy. Vocal Christmas carol "Little
Drummer Boy" at 0318.5. SINPO 35543 w/ oncl peaks to S4 and significant
xmtr problems. Frequency drift was really bad, between 5.00975 and
5.0110+, and so rapid I couldn't keep up with it by retuning.
Each time the frequency would drift, the transmitter would become
distorted and occasionally I would lose the ECSS lock if I didn't retune
fast enough. This transmitter definitely has stability problems! In
addition they seemed to be playing with the power as the signal would
suddenly almost disappear for several tens of seconds at a time. Pretty
much permanently disappeared at 0325 even though signal lvl was holding
just prior to that when in ECSS lock - perhaps they reduced power
significantly at that point, or could have been a rapidly changing
propagation effect and not xmtr power problems as I noticed the same
phenomena with Ethiopia on 7110 around 0330.
However, in general the best I have hrd this station here in Southern CA
on this freq. Most evenings I can just get a weak signal, if anything.
Sounded like a normal sign on from 0257 on but what gives with the non-
stop music from 0232 to 0256.5? Maybe testing.they certainly need it.
