>From various posts in the A-DX list: RAI International announced in its
German news today that the shortwave transmissions will be terminated as
of Oct 1. Attempts will be made to reach the announcer for a
clarification, especially in regard of some slim hopes that they will at
least continue on Hotbird (one mixed channel, obviously in practice just
one of the outgoing audio feeds primarily meant for the Prato Smeraldo
shortwave site, is available there).
Re. Notturno Italiano: This is widely believed to be a domestic service,
but I don't think so. Notturno Italiano is listed amongst the mediumwave
transmissions of RAI International, also including a widely unknown one in
Arabic 1330-1345:

Radio Uno, which otherwise is carried on these mediumwave outlets, has own
overnight programming, cf. their program schedule:

Perhaps an insider of Italian broadcasting can shed some light on this
matter? To me it seems that Radio Uno is limited to 0400-2200 (summer) on
mediumwave but 24/7 on FM while Notturno Italiano aims at audiences
abroad, is produced by RAI International and will thus presumably go away
as well if it is indeed a complete wind-up of the radio department of RAI
International what will happen.
Arrivederci Roma? Report that the international shortwave service of
Italy's public broadcaster RAI will end on 30 September. Italy has been on
shortwave since 1930, and RAI now transmits in 26 languages.
Already one protest.
Goodbye to RAI shortwave.
For all its quirkiness, I will miss the RAI shortwave service.
The English transmission always consisted of ten minutes of news, in past
decades read by a tired-sounding older lady. That would be followed by ten
minutes of music, with no announcements. Over the years, that music
segment was given nonsensical placeholder names such as "Free Parking."
I was on the mailing list for the RAI shortwave schedule publication,
lavishly illustrated in color and as elaborate as the actual broadcast was
austere.
Most of the evening, RAI shortwave was in Italian, and much of that was
music. This included many of the old Italian love songs from the 1950s and
1960s. The signal was usually good, owing to the southerly azimuth from
Italy to the United States. RAI shortwave was therefore a nice companion
to reading the newspaper, or washing the dishes, on a cold winter's
evening.
In North America, you can listen to what may be the last days of RAI
shortwave on 11800 kHz...
