En este camino, en un principio se recurrió a una postura universalista (más precisamente, a un etnocentrismo que echaba mano a este tipo de discursos como modo de legitimar la dominación y conquista de las nuevas tierras descubiertas), y luego, con el proceso de descolonización desde mediados de los años ´40 hasta fines de la década de 1960, comenzó a cobrar mayor fuerza una visión particularista (relativista) hacia el otro cultural, en un momento en el cual el capital empezó a montarse sobre estas “sociedades diferentes”, sin “juzgarlas” ya, sino “respetando” sus idiosincrasias e incorporándolas al mundo occidental, desde su lugar de Tercer Mundo, proceso éste que acompañó la profundización de la mundialización del capital. En este recorrido surgieron profundas problemáticas, tales como: ¿es posible emitir juicios acerca de otras culturas?, ¿existe una racionalidad universal que oriente las decisiones y conductas de los seres humanos en general? En relación a esto, ¿podemos hablar de una naturaleza humana?; es más ¿es posible comprender prácticas culturales diferentes, o cada sistema cultural es un todo coherente que no se deja aprehender desde afuera? ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias del contacto entre culturas?, ¿amenaza su integridad social? No es nuestra intención en este artículo contestar exhaustivamente estas preguntas, sino, antes bien, desarrollar algunas de éstas, vinculándolas a los contextos teórico-políticos en los cuales aparecen, con el afán de socializar problemáticamente algunos aspectos de este debate caro a la Antropología -aunque no privativo de esta disciplina-, e intentando bosquejar una postura al respecto. Asimismo, cabe señalar que esta dicotomía universal/particular es considerada también en el debate entre las posturas comprensivistas y de explicación en las Ciencias del Espíritu. Como afirma Clifford Geertz, uno de los teóricos involucrados en este debate, “unos y otros vemos las vidas de los demás a través de los cristales de nuestras propias lentes”. Explicitar cuáles son esos cristales, y qué consecuencias teórico-epistemológicas y, por supuesto, políticas, trae aparejadas el uso de estas lentes, resulta de singular importancia para posicionarse a la hora de comprender y transformar la realidad social. Etnocentrismo, o las lentes propias: La condición misma de los indios era objeto de discusión. Para algunos, no eran hombres; para otros, eran hombres, pero no cristianos, y para muchos no eran hombres porque no eran cristianos.
