a3. Health Services in Thiruvannamalai
Various health related indicators are available with respect to different blocks or other
units of health services in Thiruvannamalai. To look at the profile of health related issues,
we look at a selected list of indicators like the infant mortality rate (IMR), and the
maternal mortality ratio (MMR).
Table 4.18 gives block wise information on IMR for rural and urban areas. While
for the urban areas, IMR is at 6.5 per thousand live births, in the rural blocks it is
relatively high. In 2005, for example, its maximum level was 34 for Pernamallur. Figures
for Kalasapakkam and Anakkavur were also 30 and above. A PRSP will need to look at
interventions that will improve the IMR in these blocks.
