Abstract
This dissertation is an investigation effort in order to aprehend the way Iris
Rezende Machado – who started his political life in 1958 – structured a political
leadership to endure time. The main source of this research is the oral statement: the
interviews with Iris Rezende are the departure point to analyse his political path. All
data collected in the interviews were crosschecked with statement of eyewitnesses,
newspaper archives and other studies about politics in Goiás.
Almost twenty interviews with Iris Rezende were carried out, amounting a
total of 30 hours recording time. His memories help the understanding not only of his
political path but also gave way to the collective memory of his political group. His
memories weave with those of other political agents, thus allowing the understanding of
the memory of the group, whose leader was Pedro Ludovico Teixeira for almost five
decades.
Iris started his career in opposition to Ludovico, but moved on to support him
when he realized a politican who wishes to build a lasting career has to be part of a
strong group. Listening to his life allowed the understanding of his political inclination,
his professionality and his relation to allies and opposition. It also helped understading
how his mentality towards the modernization and administrative reorganization of
Goiás – policy of the revolutionary of the 30es and Ludovico´s motto – has been
transmitted to the agents of his political field, among which Iris, who claims his
insertion in the transition from memory to history, as a link between Ludovico´s
political and administrative actions and the actions of the same group after Ludovico.
The first chapter proposes a theoretical discussion about memory, the act of
recalling and forgetting, oral history and also the organization of a political career. Iris
tells his memories in the second chapter. In the third chapter, I take up Iris´ memories to
interpret them historically.
