Fearful I enter class 1
mother holding one hand father the other hand
even though I am young I ask myself what my grandfather would hold if
he were
neither dead nor handicapped
my desk has an ABC and the inscription »nela meet you after class in the
toilets«
on the wall a sign welcome children
and a portrait of comrade nicolae ceauşescu of whom we are taught in
the first lesson
that he is the father of all the children in romania
and
I can hardly wait for the day to end to ask for chocolate
to see if any I will be
given
my classmate sharing our desk is small and blond
she has pigtails
she is crying for her mother I am wiping her tears and encouraging her
I tell her
