dessen Professor, August M. Knoll, ausführlich in seinem offiziellen Tagebuch.
Über Knolls Interessen und Arbeitsschwerpunkte notierte er zutreffend:
He is working on the relation of theological and legal conceptions of commercial
regulation. He is also interested in the sociology of religion and has published a study
of the controversy between Jesuits and Dominicans over the taking of tributes from
the people. He has attempted to explain the opposing views of these two orders on
the basis of their differing histories and organizational structures. He gives general
lectures on sociology to students of law and lectures on the sociology of religion and
the history of sociological thought to students of philosophy. 67
In Knolls Seminar würden Scheler, Mannheim, Weber diskutiert und ihre Schriften
im Lichte des sozialen Hintergrundes interpretiert, der in ihren Biographien
gefunden werde. Knoll ermuntere Studenten auch zu empirischen Arbeiten, aber
diese schienen DeVinney ” exclusively bibliographical and highly theoretical. No
statistics is taught in the faculty of philosophy at all, and there appears to be no
interest in genuine empirical research.“ Rosenmayr habe als Dissertation eine
Literaturarbeit, eine ” library study“, durchgeführt und arbeite gegenwärtig an
einem weiteren Buch, das er zu veröffentlichen hoffe. ” This is an analysis of
liturgical hymns produced during the first five centuries of the Christian era
and an attempt to relate differences between them to differing social factors
revealed in biographical information about their authors.“ Gegenwärtig habe
Rosenmayr keine reguläre Universitätsstelle, er hoffe aber, seinen Amerikaaufenthalt
dazu benutzen zu können, eine Studie fertigzustellen, die er als Habilitation
einreichen könne. Mehr noch: Knoll und Rosenmayr hofften, daß an
der Philosophischen Fakultät eine Professur für Soziologie eingerichtet werden
würde, die Rosenmayr bekommen sollte. Über die politische Orientierung und
die Arbeitspläne des künftigen Professors heißt es dann:
R(osenmayr) is a member of the left or liberal wing of the People’s (Catholic) Party.
He is currently working on the preparation of a social exposition being prepared
jointly by the Arbeiter Kammer (an official body representing all employees) and the
Confederation of Trade Unions. This is to be a graphical presentation of the struggle
of Austrian labor from early in the nineteenth century to the present time, showing
their gains and setbacks and present goals. The main theme, as R(osenmayr) hopes,
will be to show that the major advances during the nineteenth century were made by
