As most countries in the world are also WTO members, their renewable energysupporting policies, need to follow the WTO rules. Otherwise, other WTO memberscan initiative trade dispute cases against such policies and measures. In 2010, twoWTO trade disputes were initiated on the renewable energy supporting policies ofChina and the Ontario Province of Canada. These two cases are still in the WTOtrade dispute settlement process and the final decisions about these cases are notmade yet. If it is decided that China and Canada violate their WTO obligations, theyhave to end these violating policies and measures, or compensate the other WTOmembers for the harms caused, otherwise the other WTO members have the right fortrade sanctions and retaliation actions.This paper analyzed the two WTO trade dispute cases, the necessity and varioustypes renewable energy supporting policies and actions, as well as the relevant WTOrules on local content requirements and subsidies. Climate change mitigation andrenewable energy development promotion will be a long term item on the policyagenda of many countries. With the continuing economic globalisation, theinteraction between international trade regime and the global climate regime andcountries actions for climate change mitigation will increase.
