For each single impact category <strong>the</strong>relative changes compared to <strong>the</strong> reference is illustrated. The enlarged detail of <strong>the</strong> Eco-Care-Matrix comprehensively provides in<strong>for</strong>mation about <strong>the</strong> environmental profile ofeach of <strong>the</strong> product systems under consideration. For example <strong>the</strong> MEROS ® withhydrated lime additive provides environmental benefits in all considered impactcategories compared to <strong>the</strong> baseline AIRFINE ® . But it is also clear that <strong>the</strong> aggregated single score to someextent is misleading in <strong>the</strong>ir presentation of <strong>the</strong> sodium bicarbonate environmentalimpacts since it does not illustrate <strong>the</strong> potential problem shifting or trade-off between EP(eutrophication potential) <strong>and</strong> POCP (photochemical ozone creation potential) <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>benefit of global warming (GWP) <strong>and</strong> acidification (AP). This is much better observed in<strong>the</strong> multiple impact category presentation in figure 9. Presentation of this type of tradeoffsis important in many cases to be aware that <strong>the</strong> avoided environmental problem isnot overshadowed by environmental impacts induced. For example is it generally seenthat environmental technologies (cleaning <strong>and</strong> abatement) helps remediate one environmentalproblem through <strong>the</strong> consumption of energy or that providing a higher energyefficiency in <strong>the</strong> use phase may cause higher environmental impacts during production(e.g. depletion of scarce resources). In order to raise awareness of <strong>the</strong> consequences ofdecisions taken it is <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e advocated that presentation of results cannot be solelydone by <strong>the</strong> single score indicator.Risø International <strong>Energy</strong> Conference 2011 Proceedings Page 195
