The improved bus serviced in Mauritius(Enoch, 2003) may have had a positive impact on selecting bus as a mode of transport towork, especially in period of road congestions.5. Modelling Car EmissionsHaving studied <strong>the</strong> various determinants that influence <strong>the</strong> travel to work choice of anindividual, it would be interesting to look at <strong>the</strong> trend in car emissions, especially CO 2emissions. An increase in car possession can instigate both congestion <strong>and</strong> environmentaldilemmas. Indeed, congestions <strong>and</strong> environment concerns are two sides of <strong>the</strong> same coin.CO 2 emissions produced during <strong>the</strong> combustion process are considered a majorecological threat as <strong>the</strong>y contributed to global warming. For instance, during acute trafficcongestions, CO 2 emissions have a tendency to rise due to <strong>the</strong> unrelenting stop-<strong>and</strong>-gotraffic <strong>and</strong> acceleration <strong>and</strong> braking. Alarmingly, vehicle emissions from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>transport sector have followed an upward trend over <strong>the</strong> past decades in Mauritius(Enoch, 2003).Vehicle emissions are a direct consequence of <strong>the</strong> mode of transport <strong>and</strong> congestions. Inan attempt to study CO 2 emissions ejected by cars, <strong>the</strong> guidelines 13 provided by TheIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are employed.
