Nielsen, Troels Laier & Karen L.AnthonsenAbstractThe Danish subsurface contains huge geothermal resources that maycontribute to a safe, sustainable and reliable supply of energy. Geothermalenergy may thus play an important role in the energy strategy in Denmark.The exploitation of the resources is especially attractive in urban areaswhere it can be combined with district heating systems. The challenge is tofind areas where the adequate geological conditions in the subsurfacecoincide with the presence of essential infrastructure on the surface. Themost promising geothermal reservoirs occur within the thick Triassic–LowerCretaceous successions in the Danish and North German Basins. Thepotential resource is determined by a number of geological parameters ofwhich the burial depth, thickness, net/gross ratio, continuity (presence offaults or lateral lithological changes) and porosity and permeability of thereservoir sandstones, and the chemistry and temperature of the formationwater are the most important. These parameters are all dependent ongeological processes and can be investigated by geological and geophysicalmethods. In most places a preliminary assessment of the geothermalpotential can be carried out based on interpretations of data and samplesfrom existing wells, seismic surveys and temperature measurements fromthe local area. Subsequently the initial assessment, if promising, may befollowed by acquisition of new data and further investigations following astepwise maturation method with a number of decision gates proposed inthis paper.IntroductionConcerns with respect to the anthropogenic CO 2 emission to the globalatmosphere and the predicted climate changes are rising. Use of geothermalenergy in district heating systems is a very promising option for reducing theconsumption of fossil fuels. It is a well-established technology and directutilisation of geothermal energy shows an increase of almost 80% from 2005to 2009 amounting to c. 50,583 MW by the end 2009 (Lund & Freeston2010). The strong growth is related to increasing public awareness and useof heat pumps. In Denmark exploitation of geothermal energy is related tolow-enthalpy resources, i.e. reservoir temperatures of less than 150°C. TheDanish subsurface is well-known owing to a long period of hydrocarbonexploration activities. The many data, reports, analytical results, and physicalsamples such as cores and cuttings samples are kept orderly in the nationalarchives at GEUS. This wealth of information forms an extensive databasefor the evaluation of the geothermal potential of the subsurface. Researchhave shown that the subsurface contains sedimentary successions withseveral thick, porous and highly suitable aquifers that have a greatgeothermal potential, as they flow saline formation water with temperaturesbetween 25–90ºC at the depths of 1–3 km.
