Commins and Nolan (2011) investigate the Irish travel patterns and theirdeterminants. Travel and supply-side characteristics such as travel time, costs, worklocation and public transport availability, as well as demographic and socio-economiccharacteristics such as age and household composition are found to have significanteffects on the mode of transport to work.The choice of the mode of transport has a direct impact on the environment. For instance,an increase in car ownership can be accounted for the upward trend of CO 2 emissions inthe transport sector in Mauritius. This situation is aggravated with the occurrence ofchronic bottlenecks (Van Mierlo et al., 2004). Almost all existing transport studies havefocused on the decomposition of national CO 2 emissions. Decomposition methodologicalanalysis, such as Laspeyres index and Divisia index, have been mainly applied toexamine energy consumption, energy saturation and pollution emission. These techniquesbreak down an object into a multiplicative product of various elements to search theprimary components impacting its variation. The logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI)method is presently considered as among the most approving decomposition techniques(Ang, 2004). The LMDI provides a residual-free decomposition and can accommodatethe occurrence of zero values in a data set.
