As a result of this the risk of local or regional price increases cannot be disregarded.The futureThe future is here. We are well on our way to convert our facilities to using markedly increasing quantitiesof biomass for energy supply purposes. However, while we consume constantly increasing quantities ofbiomass for energy purposes, we need to remember that in view of our present knowledge, biomass is theonly resource that can substitute oil in the chemical industry and also that biomass for energy purposescompete for the same areas to grow human food and animal feed.ConclusionBy way of conclusion, biomass is well on its way into the European energy supply, away from a marginal toa major role, and the pace of many areas must change if the ambitious 2020 targets and the targets forsubsequent years are to be fulfilled. Despite of this there are discussions ahead of us that we need to gointo on the issues of sustainability and competition for areas for human food and animal feed.Risø International Energy Conference 2011 Proceedings Page 257
