In c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>with the outbreak, thecyanobacterium Anabaenalemmermannii, and the flagellateG<strong>on</strong>yostomum semen dominatedthe algal community.In a survey of 25 recreati<strong>on</strong> lakes inScania, Southern Sweden,schistosome cercariae were foundin four of these lakes. In all fourlakes, mass developments ofcyanobacteria al<strong>on</strong>e or combinedwith G<strong>on</strong>yostomum semen occurredregularly during the vegetativeseas<strong>on</strong>.Increased endotoxin levels in lakewater may be associated withdevelopments of cyanobacteriaand/or G<strong>on</strong>yostomum semen. Astudy of endotoxins inG<strong>on</strong>yostomum-dominated lakesrevealed high c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s; 220-1880 EU ml -1 . Endotoxins in theblood stream of the bird-host maystimulate the producti<strong>on</strong> of thecytokine tumour necrosis factor(TNF). TNF may, in turn, stimulateegg-laying of the schistosomeparasite as well as the excreti<strong>on</strong> ofthe parasite eggs from the host. In California,shellfish are regularly m<strong>on</strong>itored forthe presence of Paralytic ShellfishPois<strong>on</strong>ing (PSP) and domoic acidtoxins to protect human c<strong>on</strong>sumers,and there are data here, as in othercoastal areas around the world,showing that additi<strong>on</strong>al marineorganisms are c<strong>on</strong>taminated bythese same toxins. In the presentstudy our primary goal is tounderstand the extent to which PSPtoxins are c<strong>on</strong>taminating localcommercial fisheries, if at all. Herewe investigate several commerciallyimportant species, includingplanktivorous pelagic fish, a varietyof flatfish, shellfish and rock crab.Three years of data <strong>on</strong> theparticulate saxitoxin c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>sand the cell abundance ofAlexandrium catenella, the algaresp<strong>on</strong>sible for PSP in this regi<strong>on</strong>,will be compared to the presence,or lack thereof, of toxins in theseorganisms.
