INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006species can reach in bi-culturingexperiments.PO.07-15The role of nutrients on springand summer algal blooms in theEast China SeaSession: PO.07 - Ecology andoceanographyJiangtao Wang, Chuansong Zhang,Xiaoyong Shi, Xiulin WangOcean University of China, QINGDAO,ChinaDiatom and dinoflagellate bloomswere investigated in the East ChinaSea 2002-2005. When diatomblooms started in spring, thephosphate concentration decreasedfrom about 0.6 μM to 0.2 μM, whichsuggests that phosphate mighthave been the limiting factor for thediatom blooms. At the succeedingdinoflagellate bloom, the phosphateconcentration decreased to 0-0.1μM. Prorocentrum donghaiense Luwas capable of growing even atphosphate concentrations below 0.2μM.Nitrate concentration showed agradual decrease, concomitant withthe algal bloom development. At theend of Prorocentrum donghaiensebloom, the average nitrateconcentration was about 1.5 μM inthe surface water. We hypothesizedthat dinoflagellate blooms could notbe maintained when nitrateconcentrations were lower than theabove-mentioned level. It was concluded that phosphateconcentrations are essential fortriggering the blooms, nitrateconcentrations determine theduration and scale of the bloom, and silicate concentration and Si/Nratios influence which species willbe dominant. By determiningnutrient concentrations, algalblooms in the East China Sea canbe forecasted relatively accurately.PO.15-22Application of a MultiparameterMonitoring System (YSI) instudies of large-scale red tidesin the East China SeaSession: PO.15 - MonitoringYF Wang 1 , DD Zhu 2 , MJ Zhou 1 , RC Yu 11 Institute of Oceanology, CAS, QINGDAO,China2 Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA,HANGZHOU, ChinaThe multiparameter monitoringsystem (from YSI), coupled with aglobal positioning system (GPS)and an automatic meteorologicalstation, has been used in fieldcruises to study the large-scale redtides in the East China Sea,supported by the on-goingCEOHAB project. Parametersincluding chl.a, temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen,pH, and depth were recorded withthe YSI system during the cruisesduring the last five years. Theresults suggested that there weregood correlations between themeasured chl.a levels by thesystem and the analytical results ofchl.a from fluorescencespectrometer and cell counting bymicroscopy, during the red tides ofProrocentrum donghaiense, Kareniamikimotoi, Skeletonema costatum, and Thalassiosira sp. The spatialand temporal distribution pattern ofthe red tides, even the subsurfacethin layer distribution of highconcentrated microalgae, could bedepicted with the system. Data onchl.a, temperature, salinity anddepth derived from the system wereused successfully to elucidate thehydrological effects of watermasses and ocean currents on thedynamics of large scale red tides.303
