INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006lasting marine HABs in the world.Red tide data visualization usinglayered Geographic InformationSystem (GIS) datasets allowsdisplay of K. brevis count data overa 50 year period. The databasecontains ‘event response’ results aswell as cruise and transect data withfixed sampling stations collected atleast monthly. When data on count, location, depth, date, and time aredisplayed on a daily basis, asequential display of data keyed bysymbols and colour shows theprogression of a bloom beingtransported cross-shelf and longshore. This data layer can beintegrated with winds, currentmodels, hurricanes and othervariables to visualize animatedmovement and forcing functions onthe west Florida shelf. Although thedatabase is composed of disparatedatasets from haphazard, directed,or repetitive sampling, GIStechnology offers geospatialanalytical capabilities not availablefor the conventional database. Thefollowing can be visualized byspecific red tide datasets: offshoreinitiation; transport from the Gulf ofMexico to the Florida east coast;long-shore movement, both south tonorth and vise versa; and theforcing of currents on initialsoutherly transport. In addition, GISanalyses allows for improvement ofsampling design.O.20-01A harmful algal bloomoccurrence in Barangay KirayanNorte, Miagao, Iloilo, PhilippinesSession: O.20 - Regional eventsPresentation time: 11:00 - 11:20JP Peralta 1 , SS Garibay 1 , JRN Noble 2 ,RMM Espina 3 , AN Nualla 31 Univ. Phil. Visayas, ILOILO, Philippines2 Municipality of Miag-ao, ILOILO,Philippines3 Miag-ao Municipal Health Office, ILOILO,PhilippinesOn March 1, 2005, a dense mat offloating algae had accumulatedinshore, and began to rot. Coastalresidents of Barangay KirayanNorte, Miagao, Iloilo, Philippinesexperienced problems sleeping atnight, children had difficultybreathing, and some had skinirritations and itchiness. Since thesea breeze flows inland, theresidents were affected by therotting algae, which smelledseaweedy and ammoniacal. One of the residents tried to mitigatethe dilemma by harvesting thewash-up algae, which had piledinshore, and buried it in a sand pit.The person, who harvested thealgae with his unprotected barehands, experienced swelling of hisface and other skin irritations. The probable causative organismwas identified as Lyngbyamajuscula, a filamentouscyanobacterium whose colour isdark-green to black. The presenceof L. majuscula in the coastalcommunities now poses risks to itsresidents. Monitoring and furtherstudy of this phenomenon istherefore highly recommended. The paper reports on theoccurrence of the harmful algalbloom, advocates the monitoring ofthe phenomenon, and reportsinitiatives being undertaken by U.P.Visayas.O.20-02Cochlodinium blooms in Sabah,MalaysiaSession: O.20 - Regional eventsPresentation time: 11:20 - 11:40A Anton 1 , PL Teoh 1 , S Mustaffa 1 , LNordin 275
