INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006pathways may exist in differentPST-producing Alexandrium strains. This requires further study at themolecular and biochemical level.PO.15-03Relationship of magnitude andposition of the algal SICF withchlorophyll-a concentrationSession: PO.15 - MonitoringDong-Zhi ZhaoNational Marine Enviroment Monitoring C,DALIAN, ChinaTo investigate the relation of suninducedchlorophyll fluorescencenear 685nm with chlorophyll-aconcentration, the reflectancespectra of red tide species such asGymnodinium sp., Heterosigmaakashiwo, Ceratium furca and otheralgae such as Nitzschia closterium,Dicrateria zhanjiangensisHu.,Platymonas sp., Chlorococcumsp., Platymonas helgolandica var.tsingtaoensis, Chlorella sp. fromfield samples and laboratorycultures was used. R max rednormalized at R560 correlated wellwith chlorophyll-a concentration(R>0.82). To different algae, thecoefficient a of the relationshipbetween R max red/R560 andchlorophyll-a presented change. The regression equation(Rmaxred/R560 =a (chl a) b) revealthat the coefficient a varied between0.037 and 1.135, b varied between0.094 and 0.727. Simultaneouslythis study established therelationship between thefluorescence peak position andchlorophyll-a concentration. Allregression coefficients were higherthan 0.75 except Chlorococcum sp.with 0.57. The position of thefluorescence peak shifted to infraredwhen chlorophyll-a concentrationincreased, but for various species, the shift velocities of peak positionswere different. Thus Heterosigmaakashiwo was the fastes and inother algae the shift was between0.1 and 0.3nm per 10mgm -3 . Noshift was observed in Dicrateriazhanjiangensis Hu andChlorococcum sp.PO.11-12The role of allelopathy in diatomand dinoflagellate blooms in theEast China SeaSession: PO.11 - AllelopathyWeihong Zhao 1 , Meimei Chen 1 ,Jiangtao Wang 21 Institute of Oceanology, CAS, QINGDAO,China2 Ocean University of China, QINGDAO,ChinaSkeletonema costatum, Kareniamikimotoi and Prorocentrumdonghaiense blooms took placesuccessively in the East China Seain the spring of 2005. Bloom waterwas collected and filtered.Skeletonema costatum, Pseudonitzschiapungens, Alexandriumtamarense, P. donghaiense, andProrocentrum micans were culturedin the above filtered solutions toexplore the role of allelopathy in thephytoplankton communitysuccession. The results showedthat the water collected from boththe S. costatum bloom and the K.mikimotoi bloom stimulated growthof the five tested species. Mixedwater from K. mikimotoi and P.donghaiense blooms stimulatedgrowth of all tested species exceptS. costatum. The stimulatory effectof K. mikimotoi on P. donghaiensewas most marked and intensifiedwith the concentration of K.mikimotoi. Thus the stimulusproduced by S. costatum on K.mikimotoi and P. donghaiense maygive it an advantage in later K.312
