The ability todetect such targets, especially HABspecies and toxins, in real or nearrealtime is of immediate utility toresearchers studying HAB/toxindynamics and to coastal managerscharged with mitigating thesocioeconomic impacts of blooms.The Environmental SampleProcessor (ESP;www.mbari.org/microbial/ESP) wasdeveloped for the autonomous, subsurfaceapplication of moleculardiagnostic tests and during initialdeployments has successfully runDNA probe arrays for several HABspecies. To address the need forconcurrent detection of algal toxins,which are known to vary widely inconcentration depending on algalphysiological status, we recentlyfielded a toxin extraction protocolcoupled with immuno-based toxinarrays during deployments of asecond generation ESP. Throughapplication of species and toxinarrays, known toxic Pseudonitzschiaspp. and domoic acid (DA)were detected concurrently onboardthe ESP in Monterey Bay, CA, USA,representing the first remote,integrated assessment of algal cellabundance and toxin concentrationin coastal waters. Taxon- specificprobes were developed for HABalgae that occur in three differentcoastal areas in Europe. Asandwich-hybridization assay isused to detect the rRNA. A captureprobe, immobilised on the65
