INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Harmful</strong> <strong>Algae</strong>, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006StatutesThese Statutes apply <strong>on</strong>ly to the global organizati<strong>on</strong> of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Society forthe Study of <strong>Harmful</strong> <strong>Algae</strong>.Article 1. The name of the Society shall be "The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Society for the Studyof <strong>Harmful</strong> <strong>Algae</strong>" (ISSHA), hereafter referred to as "the Society".Article 2. The Society shall be an internati<strong>on</strong>al n<strong>on</strong>-governmental, n<strong>on</strong>-political andnot-for-profit organizati<strong>on</strong>.Article 3. The Society shall be affiliated to the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council for Science(ICSU) family of organizati<strong>on</strong>s as a c<strong>on</strong>stituent part of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> ofBiological Sciences (IUBS), through the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Associati<strong>on</strong> of BiologicalOceanography (IABO). The Society shall have observer status with theIntergovernmental Oceanographic Commissi<strong>on</strong> (IOC) of UNESCO.Aims and ObjectivesArticle 4. The aims of the Society shall be to advance understanding by thepromoti<strong>on</strong> and pursuit of all aspects of the study of harmful algae and to widelydisseminate the results of this research.Article 5. The objectives of the Society shall be to:i. promote the study of harmful algae, including their occurrence, relatedoceanographic factors, ecophysiology, tax<strong>on</strong>omy and systematics, genetics,toxin chemistry, toxicology, and management and mitigati<strong>on</strong>;ii.iii.collect, evaluate and disseminate informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> harmful algae;promote harmful algal research, projects, programs and training, and extendthese activities to foster the related subjects of harmful algal bloommanagement and mitigati<strong>on</strong>;iv. promote public awareness of the social, ec<strong>on</strong>omic and ecological effectscaused by harmful algae;v. arrange and co-sp<strong>on</strong>sor nati<strong>on</strong>al, regi<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>ferences,seminars, symposia and working group meetings;vi. co-sp<strong>on</strong>sor lectures and courses, and the publicati<strong>on</strong> of scientific and populararticles, books and proceedings;vii. encourage the participati<strong>on</strong> and training of students in the study of harmfulalgae;viii. support and implement research projects and programs linked to the study ofharmful algae.MembershipArticle 6. The membership of the Society shall be open to any<strong>on</strong>e interested inpromoting the aims and objectives of the Society.Article 7. Membership of the Society shall comprise the following categories:322
