The paper will presenta review of the various techniqueswe applied; namely 2-DE, 2-DDIGE, MALDI TOF MS/MS, N-terminal sequencing andimmunoblotting; and the results wehave obtained in HAB studies.PO.16-02Distribution of dinoflagellateresting cysts in surfacesediments from ChangjiangEstuary in the spring of 2004Session: PO.16 – Life cyclesZH Wang, YZ Qi, YF YangJinan University, GUANGZHOU, ChinaSurface sediments were sampled inApril and May of 2004 fromsouthern Changjiang Estuary, where a large- scale Prorocentrumdonghaiense red tide accompaniedby Alexandrium sp. occurred inearly May of 2004, in order to studycyst composition and distributionbefore and during the red tide. Results showed only fewdifferences in cyst compositionbetween the two surveys. Theaverage cyst concentrations in Apriland May were 374 and 482 cystsper gram D.W. sediment, respectively. Cysts of Alexandriumoccurred commonly but in lownumbers, and the maximumconcentration during the bloom was219 cysts per gram D.W. sediment.High sand content in sediments, high sedimentary rate, huge dilutedwater and complicated watercurrents, are thought to result in thelow cyst assemblages inChangjiang Estuary. Thedestination of the Alexandrium cystsformed after the bloom is discussedas.PO.06-10The interspecific competition oftwo HAB species: Prorocentrumdonghaiense and AlexandriumtamarenseSession: PO.06 - Population dynamicsZL Wang, RX Li, MY ZhuFirst Institute of Oceanography, SOA,QINGDAO, ChinaWe studied the population dynamicsand interspecific competition ofProrocentrum donghaiense andAlexandrium tamarense, twocommon HAB species in East ChinaSea, by using semi-continuousdilution experiments. Prorocentrumdonghaiense was the winner at lowphosphate concentrations, whichcompletely excluded Alexandriumtamarense. However, at highphosphate conditions, thecompetition between the twospecies was different, and eithercaused exclusion of one species orcoexistence. The results also showthat the competition results dependon the cell densities which the two302
