Dohrn, NAPLES,ItalyRecently, the genus Skelet<strong>on</strong>emahas underg<strong>on</strong>e profound revisi<strong>on</strong>,which has revealed four newspecies within <strong>on</strong>e of the mostc<strong>on</strong>spicuous marine phytoplankt<strong>on</strong>taxa, S. costatum. Morphologicaland molecular analyses have nowbeen extended to more than 150strains from all over the world withthe aim of a) assessing the diversityof the genus, b) investigating themorphological and molecularvariability of the different species,and c) depicting their geographicranges. This study has uncoveredlive material of S. costatum and S.grevillei, which were previously <strong>on</strong>lyknown from their type materialcollected in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g waters 130year ago. In additi<strong>on</strong>, a new specieshas been found in material from thePacific Ocean. The analysis ofstrains from different areas hasrevealed c<strong>on</strong>sistent genetic diversity(LSU data) within some species(e.g. S. dohrnii, S. menzelii, S.tropicum), which still retainm<strong>on</strong>ophyly and separati<strong>on</strong> fromclosely related species. Otherspecies (S. marinoi and S.jap<strong>on</strong>icum) are insteadhomogeneous over their range.Despite the limited number ofstrains available for each species,geographic patterns arerecognisable, which differ am<strong>on</strong>gspecies and am<strong>on</strong>g geneticallydistinct populati<strong>on</strong>s withinmorphologically defined species.The possible origin and ecologicalsignificance of cryptic diversity inSkelet<strong>on</strong>ema is discussed.314
