During this charming tour of the city, you will seemany of the main points of interest within the city: City Hall Square, theCarlsberg Glyptotek and Tivoli Gardens, the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Museum and the old“Latin Quarter” - so called because here you find the university and academiccentre of old Copenhagen, - the Round Tower and the Old Fish Market. Here,you board our chartered, specially built canal launches and cruise through thecanals and harbour. You will see Copenhagen as sailors have seen it forseveral centuries, passing under the incredibly low bridges to view some ofthe fabulous buildings that - typically for a city with maritime associati<strong>on</strong>s - areall close to the sea or the waterways: Christian IV’s Stock Exchange,Christiansborg Palace and Holmens Church - the Naval church inCopenhagen - and the charming old sailor’s quarter Nyhavn, AmalienborgPalace and the Little Mermaid. The Canal tour ends at the new magnificentOpera House that has been d<strong>on</strong>ated to the people of Denmark by the worldlargest shipping company Maersk.Kings and Vikings - a step back in history (4 h. incl. lunch bag)The ingredients of this tour are the tough, redbearded warriors and traderswho marauder, c<strong>on</strong>quered and traded with most of maritime western Europeand their descendants, Royal or comm<strong>on</strong>er. The tour takes you to Roskilde,where you will visit the Viking Ship Museum which houses the remains of 5Viking ships salvaged from the bed of the fjord and painstakingly preserved. Ashort drive to the centre of Roskilde, for a visit to the twin-spied Cathedral:until the early 15th century, Roskilde was the capital of Denmark - proof of itsstrategic importance in the early Middle Ages - and all Danish m<strong>on</strong>archs wereburied here. Although no l<strong>on</strong>ger the capital, Danish Kings and Queens are stilllaid to rest in Roskilde.The Castles of North Sealand (4 h. incl. lunch bag)This marvellous outing takes you to North Sealand - the beautiful countrysidenorth of Copenhagen to Fredensborg to see Fredensborg Palace which is theSpring and Autumn residence of the Queen of Denmark and the residence ofthe Crown Prince. The tour c<strong>on</strong>tinues to the small town of Hillerød where youwill be c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted with <strong>on</strong>e of the dominant figures am<strong>on</strong>gst Danish m<strong>on</strong>archs- Christian IV and his Frederiksborg Palace. Built <strong>on</strong> a small island in a lake,Frederiksborg Palace is a magnificent Renaissance palace - beautifullysituated and unbelievably detailed, which today houses the Museum ofDanish Nati<strong>on</strong>al History.317
