Seventeenstrains belonging to the generaCyanobacterium, Oscillatoria,Synechocystis and Synechococcuswere tested for antifungal andantibacterial activity and ten ofthese strains were screened forcytotoxic activity against primary rathepatocytes and HL-60 cells.Extracts of different polarities weretested. No inhibitory effects werefound against the fungi Candidaalbicans and a wide range of Gramnegativebacteria. Ninecyanobacterial strains were found tohave antibiotic activity against twoGram-positive bacteria, Clavibactermichiganensis subsp. insidiosumand Cellulomonas uda. Slightapoptotic effects were observed inprimary rat hepatocytes whenexposed to aqueous extracts but nosignificant apoptotic effects wereregistered when cells were exposedto organic extracts. A highpercentage of apoptotic cells wereobserved for HL-60 cells whentreated with the cyanobacterialorganic extracts. Our datademonstrated that marinecyanobacteria extracts causeinhibition of Gram-positive bacteriaand induce apoptosis in eukaryoticcells. The different activity indifferent extracts suggests differentcompounds with different polarities.Cyanobacterial strains of the generaSynechocystis and Synechococcusproved to be a potential source ofbioactive compounds.PO.13-86The genus Ostreopsis in therecreational waters along theCatalan Coast and BalearicIslands (NW Mediterranean Sea)Session: PO.13 - Regional eventsM MasoInstituto Ciencias del Mar, BARCELONA,SpainTwo Ostreopsis species have beendetected in the Mediterranean Sea,Ostreopsis cf. siamensis and O.ovata. Both are toxic (palytoxinanalogues) and live looselyattached to macroalgae, althoughthey have the availability to detachand swim in the water column.Respiratory problems have beenrecently related with theseorganisms in some Mediterraneancoastal areas. In August 2004, 200people were affected by respiratorydifficulties in the central part of theCatalan coast. Studies on thedistribution of these epiphyticdinoflagellates are scarce and it isan urgent task to be done due to itspotential danger. During the touristseason, an extensive monitoringassociated with bathing beacheswas performed in twoMediterranean coastal regionsexploited for recreational use.235
