INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006valve gape. Bioassays wereconducted to test survival of larvalshellfish exposed to A. monilatumas whole, unconstrained cells, cellsheld in dialysis tubing, or sonicatedcells. Sonicated A. monilatumcaused a significant decrease inlarval survival, in comparison tosurvival of the control larvae thatwere tested with nontoxicAlexandrium tamarense. Overall, these data indicate that A.monilatum blooms can adverselyaffect shellfish survival by reducingclearance rate and valve gape, affecting food intake, and inducinglarval mortality.PO.13-53Early detection and intensivemonitoring during an unusualtoxic bloom of Gymnodiniumcatenatum advected into theGalician Rías (NW, Spain)Session: PO.13 - Regional eventsY Pazos 1 , A Moroño 1 , J Triñanes 2 , MDoval 1 , P Montero 1 , MG Vilarinho 3 , MTMoita 31 INTECMAR, PONTEVEDRA, Spain2 Universidad de Santiago de Compostela,SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain3 IPIMAR, LISBOA, PortugalCooperation between Galician andPortuguese monitoring programsallowed an early alert of aGymnodinium catenatum bloom inthe Galician Rías a month beforethe PSP toxin accumulation inmussels. Both programs detectedisolated chains of G. catenatumfrom July 2005. The Portuguesemonitoring system warned abouthigh concentrations of G. catenatumon the Lisbon shelf in Septemberand the progressive increase in theconcentrations northward thereafter. From the near real-time sea surfacetemperature fields, it was inferredthat a northward coastal currentwas present during this period. On October 24th, a strong-downwelling (Iw < -1000 m3·s-1·km 1 ) event occurred and surfacewaters warmer (>16.5 ºC) and lesssaline (35.2) flowed into the Rías,advecting a G. catenatumpopulation (max. 1.7 x10 5 cells·L -1 ).Data from a lagrangian drifter(NOAA/CoastWatch) confirmed thepresence of a northward coastalcurrent (Vel ~0.2-0.6 m·s -1 ) on thesedates. Temporal fluctuations in G.catenatum bloom dynamic followedthe upwelling-downwelling events.High cell concentrations persisteduntil December, decreasinggradually until spring 2006. After tenyears of no G. catenatum bloomingin Galician Rías, this intense andpersistent episode caused bans onmussel culture areas (averageproduction>2x10 5 tons·year -1 ) untilmid-February, having an importantsocial and economic impact.PO.10-45Carbon dioxide productionduring an exceptionaldinoflagellate bloom at TodosSantos Bay, Baja California,MéxicoSession: PO.10 - Ecophysiology &autecologyJL Peña-Manjarrez 1 , MD Martinez-Gaxiola 1 , G Gaxiola-Castro 2 , ME de laCruz-Orozco 2 , J Cepeda-Morales 21 Centro de Estudios Tecnologicos del Mar,ENSENADA, B.
