Today old woodenships are moored al<strong>on</strong>g the quay, andduring the summer m<strong>on</strong>ths the manyrestaurants <strong>on</strong> the southern, 'sunnyside' move tables oudoors, where youcan enjoy your lunch while watchingthe changing scenery.This used to be the sailors' red lightdistrict but has today become verymuch 'in'. On a warm summer's day,so many people gather here to seeand be seen that it looks as though thequay will sink! Most of the buildingsdate back to 1700s, which adds to theatmosphere.today. But the locati<strong>on</strong> has attracted anumber of restaurants, which can befound in the basement of some of the17th century houses.Modern surroundingsNot every eating place in town isnostalgic and historic. The restaurantof the new Royal Danish Library hasan excellent view of the harbour. It isnamed after our famous philosopher,Søren Kierkegaard. Or you maychoose to have your meal in the NewOpera House restaurant, which alsooverlooks the harbour. Here you are<strong>on</strong> the top floor and look across to theAmalienborg Palace and the MarbleChurch - quite breathtaking!Gråbrødre TorvAnother scenic place is the smallsquare off the main pedestrian street,Gråbrødre Torv, behind the church ofthe Holy Ghost. Under the vaults of<strong>on</strong>e of Copenhagen's medievalm<strong>on</strong>asteries are several restaurantsoffering open sandwiches, informallunches as well as French gourmetevening meals.TivoliIn this fairy tale garden in the heart ofCopenhagen, which is open from midApril to mid September and again fromlate November to 23 December, thereare more than 38 restaurants.Between them they have everythingfrom fast food to 5-star gourmetcuisine. After dark, thousands of lightsilluminate the garden making it theideal place to take your date fora romantic evening.Gammel StrandThe name actually means 'old beach'as this was originally theCopenhagen waterfr<strong>on</strong>t. Until aboutfifty years ago fishihng ships sailed upto the quay unloading their catch andmaking this the city's open fishmarket.
