In Costa Rica andTehuantepec Gulf (México) the firstbloom was in October 1989,resulting in 99 sick people and 3fatalities. The toxin level was 811 µgSTXeq 100g –1 . Subsequently (1995-1996), this species was registeredagain in México, reaching the coastof Michoacán, and causing death ofmarine organisms at a toxin level of6,337 µg STXeq 100g –1 . In CostaRica a subsequent bloom tookplace 10 years later (1999-2001)covering the entire Pacific coast, and both morphotypes var.compressa and var. bahamenseoccurred. In Acapulco, México in2001 the toxin level reported was7,309 µg STXeq 100g –1 . Meanwhilein Chiapas, resting cysts wereregistered in the water column fromJanuary 2001 and the firstvegetative cells in March 2001. Weobserved exponential growth untilthe formation of the bloom sixmonths later. Cysts were alsoobserved in the water column whenthe bloom advanced. The lastregistration was in November-December 2005 in the Gulf ofPapagayo (Costa Rica) withdensities of 350x10 6 cells l -1 . Thesame event was registered inChiapas (México) from December toMarch 2006, reaching cell densitiesof 950 cells l -1 and a toxin level of200 µg STXeq 100g –1 .PO.06-04Dinoflagellate blooms andparalytic shellfish poisoningproducers in Uruguayan waters,in relation to environmentalconditionsSession: PO.06 - Population dynamicsSM Méndez, O GalliNational Direction of Aquatic Resources,MONTEVIDEO, UruquayToxic dinoflagellate blooms havebeen a recurrent phenomenon inUruguayan waters since 1991.
